Showing the World That Little People Can Lead Big Lives

Dr. Jennifer L. Arnold

It’s not the plot of “Little Couple,” the newest reality show on TLC, that is extraordinary, but rather the stars. The show centers on Bill Klein and Jen Arnold whose dwarfism is secondary to the daily trials of being newlyweds and building a life together.

According to The Little People of America, there are an estimated 300 types of dwarfism. Jen, also known as Dr. Jennifer Arnold, was born with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, or SED, in which a random genetic mutation causes abnormal collagen formation. This led to her dwarfed stature; she stands 3 feet, 2 inches.

Arnold, a pediatrician, neonatal specialist and assistant professor of pediatrics, was determined to live a full, productive life despite her size.

“Everyone has to make an individual choice of what is the right career path for them, but it is hard when people choose roles that are primarily perpetuating stereotypes.”

She has more than succeeded in finding a way to participate in the world on her own terms.  Entering medical school she decided to specialize in other small people – the littlest babies in the neo-natal unit.

When children ask her why she is different, she explains that some people are made tall, some are short and she happens to be really little. “Children usually accept that and move on.”

According to Vitals, Jennifer received her medical degree at John Hopkins University and completed an internship in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She is presently the Medical Director of The Pediatric Simulation Center in Texas Children’s Newborn Center as well as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine.

Fans of “Little Couple” can expect to be inspired and entertained as they watch Bill and Dr. Jen move to a new city, buy a home and contemplate starting a family as they negotiate the usual ups and downs newlyweds face.

Chicken Recipe for Mom and Baby needs a Physical. Which Rachel Ray should they call?

Dr. Rachel Ray

What does an award winning talk- show host /chef, based in New York City, have in common with a beloved pediatrician living in Lakeland, Florida? Both play to a large, admiring audience, have an uncanny resemblance to each other and are named Rachel Ray.

Dr. Rachel Ray was recently invited to appear on the Rachel Ray Show and she describes their meeting to Vitals. “The only actual conversation I had with her was while we were taping. I suppose Rachel is a busy lady - I understand that. I can imagine how hectic her life must be!”

The confusion over their names sometimes extends to her pediatric office. She once got a call from Sweden asking her for some recipes. “Obviously most people don’t come to the office asking for recipes, but the most frequent question is if I like to cook. The truth is I do. I have 4 children and am a pediatrician, so I tend to cook a lot like Rachel Ray- almost everything in 30 minutes or less. Otherwise I’d have no time for laundry!”

When asked what her recipe is for dealing with young, anxious patients, she says that most kids feel at home in her office and it is usually the parents who are anxious, especially parents of newborns.

“I always spend more time with these parents, because they are going through one of the most anxiety-producing experiences of their lives. They are constantly getting bombarded with advice from everywhere. And the truth is babies are sometimes hard to read, after all they can’t talk and they cry all the time!”

Although Dr. Rachel Ray did receive many phone calls requesting recipes, as far as we know Rachel Ray the chef has not as yet medicated or inoculated any children. Still, this confirms our belief that everyone on this planet has a twin, as is with the case with these two highly rated and hugely popular Rachel Rays.
