Doctors are Infusing Stem Cells for Heart Failures

Michael Jones, a 66 year-old male, volunteered for the stem cell trial procedure after two heart attacks left him with severe congestive heart failure. Doctors harvested a small portion of Jones’s heart in March and it was sent to a lab to cultivate existing stem cells from his own heart and grow them at a rapid rate. Over three months, researchers grew a million cardiac stem cells from Jones’ own tissue. Those stem cells were injected back into Jones’s heart with a catheter on July 17th. Doctors hope the injected stem cells will perform their natural function, but at a more rapid rate, and repair the damaged muscle in Jones’s heart.

“This really seemed like the natural thing to do,” said Michael Jones, “It just made sense to use the body to regenerate itself.”

Doctors at Jewish Hospital and the University of Louisville introduced the first patient in the world to undergo adult cardiac stem cell infusion. Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Mark Slaughter says Jones was a great candidate for the test.

“He had several heart attacks, he had very poor heart function. Physically, he was very limited. In several years, most likely, his only option would be transplant or potentially a mechanical heart,” he says.

According to Vitals.com, Dr. Slaughter specializes in coronary heart bypass, heart failure, heart transplantation, postoperative complications and heart valve prosthesis implantation.

Dr. Roberto Bolli is leader of this study, and director of the University of Louisville’s Institute for Molecular Cardiology. According to Vitals.com, Dr. Bolli is certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease.

Dr. Bolli says with great anticipation, “If they work in humans as they have done in experimental animal models, this will be a truly revolutionary treatment for heart failure.”

Doctors say there are six million Americans with heart failure, with nearly 700,000 new cases every year. They believe if this infusion procedure works, adult stem cells will give millions new hope.

Heart attacks are a leading killer of men and women in the US, with 1.5 million attacks occurring each year resulting in 500,000 deaths. A minimally invasive surgery, which repairs a patient’s heart using the patient’s own heart stem cells, could become an option in the foreseeable future.

June 29th marked the completion of the first procedure on Kenneth Milles, a 39-year-old from San Fernando Valley.  After experiencing a heart attack May 10, his own cardiac tissue was used to grow specialized heart stem cells and then injected back into his heart. The hope is the stem cells will repair and regenerate healthy cardiac muscle.

“This procedure signals a new and exciting era in the understanding and treatment of heart disease,” says Eduardo Marban, MD PhD, who developed the technique and is leading the clinical trials.

According to Vitals.com, Dr. Marban received his medical degree from Yale and completed a residency in cardiovascular disease at John Hopkins. He is presently the director of the Cedars Sinai Heart Institute.

Kenneth and all other 23 participants in the study will be monitored for six months. The complete results are scheduled to be available in late-2010.

“If successful, we hope the procedure would be widely available in a few years and broadly applied to cardiac patients. If patients can regrow damaged heart muscle, there would be lesser demand for expensive and risky treatments such as heart transplants.”

Dr. Mehmet Cilingiroglu, an Arkansas based internist specializing in cardiology, has developed an optical tomography device that can identify signs of heart attacks before they occur.

“We can learn in advance about a potential cardiac arrest with the help of intravenous imaging.”

Volcano Corporation, developer and manufacturer of endovascular devices, has invested $25 million to purchase the patent rights and bring the product to the market sometime in the next two years.

According to Vitals.com, Mehmet Cilingiroglu, had finished medical school in Turkey, and completed his residency at Virginia Commonwealth University and fellowship in Baylor College of Medicine in Texas.

Dr. Conrad Murray could have used one of these optical tomography devices to know of the impending cardiac arrest of Michael Jackson.
