Fort Hood, TX has become known as a temporary military base before and after deploying soldiers to Iraq or Afghanistan.  They have also become associated with having the highest number of suicides among all military bases since the start of the war in Iraq in 2003.

Major Nidal Hasan, army psychiatrist who killed 13 and wounded 29, is now awake from his coma and talking.  He is only one case among hundreds of victims who fall victim to the overpowering stress of being sent to war.

“Dr. Hasan hated the US war on terror equating that with a war on Islam.” – from a Wolf Blitzer tweet.
“The system is not doing what it’s supposed to do. He at least should have been confronted about these beliefs, told to cease and desist, and to shape up or ship out.” – AP
“Dr Hasan was a vociferous opponent of the war and viewed the war against terror as a war against Islam. He was a Muslim first and an American second. In retrospect, I’m not surprised he did it,” Finnell said. “I had real questions about what his priorities were, what his beliefs were.” – CBSNews.com
“Our class was a very diverse class, people from many different backgrounds, but Dr. Hasan made it a point to be very vocal in his beliefs, very extreme in his views, and since he was a military officer, you know, he was questioned about those things. He sort of brought the criticism upon himself…. This was a big topic for him, this was a dominating topic for him.” - CNN.com

Update: Vitals.com just checked the ratings logs and the below comment came in at 5:30pm EST, while the shooting was at 4:30pm EST and we suspect this comment by Pvt J. Hammond maybe fictitious. Thanks to our readers for pointing out the impossibilities of his comments.

The following comment was written earlier today on Vitals.com by someone calling himself Pvt J. Hammond.

“Although he was hard to understand (strong accent) this doctor helped me come to terms with my conscientious objector status. While I am still not thrilled about being deployed to Iraq, I at least understand how doing so to protect my fellow soldiers is a good thing.”
