Dr. Jennifer Arnold and Hubby Hope to Adopt Dwarf Child

After the heartbreak of their surrogate miscarrying their child, Dr. Jennifer Arnold and her husband Bill Klein of TLC’s hit show “The Little People” have decided on adopting a child – preferably, one with dwarfism, or another special need.

In a preview of their premiere episode, Dr. Arnold – a neonatologist with Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston – explains that adoption was always their second plan of action in building a family if surrogacy was unsuccessful. Dr. Arnold said,

“It’s always been on our radar and I think it’s time we start getting serious about it.”

Now in its fifth season, “The Little People” will continue chronicling this new direction in the couple’s journey towards expanding their family.

Vitals’ Most Popular Doctors of 2011

Dr. Shriram Nene and Madhuri Dixit (totalfilmy.com)

Vitals provides patients with a wealth of information on every practicing physician in the country – over 720,000 in total. But some doctors are more popular than others. Of the 250 million total page views received by doctors on Vitals in 2011, the following doctors’ profiles received the most.

You may recognize some of these doctors from television. Others, you may not have heard of at all. What these doctors have in common, though, is their ability to draw a crowd.

Here’s a look at the five most popular physicians on Vitals in 2011:

#5 Most Viewed: Dr. Tanveer Zamani

In early 2011, Pakistani national media reported that Dr. Zamani and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari were married in a secret ceremony. Both parties vehemently denied the rumor, but not before Vitals users flocked to Dr. Zaman i’s profile to learn more about Pakistan’s alleged new First Lady.

#4 Most Viewed: Dr. Andrew Ordon

Dr. Andrew Ordon is perhaps best known for his role on the popular, Emmy award-winning television show “The Doctors.” He provides a plastic surgeon’s perspective in discussing timely health topics with an ER doctor, an OB/GYN, and a pediatrician.

#3 Most Viewed: Dr. Conrad Murray

While Conrad Murray’s profile has been removed from Vitals following his involuntary manslaughter conviction and the revocation of his medical license in the death of Michael Jackson, he was nevertheless one of Vitals’ most viewed doctors in 2011 due to the interest sparked by his highly-publicized murder trial.

#2 Most Viewed: Dr. Jennifer Arnold

Dr. Arnold stars with her husband Bill Klein in TLC’s show “The Little Couple” which follows the couple as they face the challenges presented by their individual forms of dwarfism, especially when it comes to starting a family. A neonatologist caring for infants at the Texas Children’s Hospital, Dr. Arnold appeals to people of all sizes, drawing the second most visitors to her profile in 2011.

#1 Most Viewed: Dr. Shriram Nene

Dr. Nene is a thoracic surgeon who lived and practiced in Denver, Colorado for almost ten years until he and his wife decided to move to Mumbai, India in October of 2011. The news of their move wouldn’t have been noteworthy, except for the fact that Dr. Nene’s wife is one of Bollywood’s most famous actresses, Madhuri Dixit. The news of the couple’s return to India made headlines all over the world and brought Dr. Nene’s Vitals profile the highest number of visitors in 2011!

Dr. Jen Arnold and Hubby Saddened By Surrogate’s Miscarriage, Remain Hopeful

(houstonpettalk.com)

The Little Couple stars Dr. Jennifer Arnold and husband Bill Klein, who have a type of bone-growth disorder known as skeletal dysplasia which causes dwarfism, had earlier decided to use a surrogate to have a baby, as a pregnancy could take a great toll on her health and lead to complications.

Dr. Arnold and Klein knew that their surrogate was expecting. However, their joy was short-lived as the couple learned that their surrogate miscarried their unborn child.

Dr Jennifer Arnold expressed, “I cried my eyes out. I deal with families who lose their babies and I will cry with them, but I thought I would be stronger. Nothing can completely prepare for all that when it is about you.”

The couple mourned their loss and comforted one another and the next day they decided to continue trying through other possible ways which included both surrogacy and adoption.

Dr Arnold explains: “By the next morning, I realized that I needed to try again. We were so close and so pregnant with the ultrasound looking good, and so it was horrible for it to end. But I couldn’t have said I was done. A lot of family asked, ‘Do you want to go through this again?’ And my answer is, yes. I would be miserable if I didn’t try again. We really want to be parents, and that is the goal here through surrogacy and adoption. We are not done trying yet.”

As both have a single gene for this type of disorder, there is a strong possibility that their genes could be passed on to their offspring. To prevent transmission of this disorder from parent to child, embryos are genetically tested before being implanted into the surrogate’s womb. The baby would be perfectly normal if none of the skeletal dysplasia genes are passed on to the baby. However, if even one gene is passed, the child would be healthy but short in stature.

Over time the challenges faced by the couple in the past have only made them stronger.

Dr. Arnold added, “We really just feel crazy fortunate to have found each other. We were both at a point of giving up. Being a little person, everything is a struggle, and it is wonderful when you achieve something you really wanted. You don’t let that go so easily.”

According to Vitals, Dr. Jennifer Arnold is a board certified pediatrician with a sub-specialty in neonatal-perinatal medicine and received her medical education from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2000.

Dr. Jennifer Arnold and Bill Klein Seeking for a Surrogate Baby

Dr. Jennifer Arnold

There are some big reasons why Dr. Jennifer (Jen) Arnold, famed by her national TV show The Little People, is one of the most viewed and highly rated doctors on Vitals.com for the last two years.

For one, there are not many doctors like her. Born with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, Arnold only stands 3 feet, 2 inches tall. That makes her shorter than most of the children on the pediatric wing of the hospital she works.

But Arnold’s focus is neonatology, meaning that she works with fragile, premature babies that are fighting to live. Arnold says that she always wanted to be a doctor.

“It was my dream to go to Johns Hopkins because I had been a patient there for most of my childhood,” she said in a recent interview with HealthCheck. “Cause otherwise, I would be in a wheelchair right now or may not even be alive,” Dr. Jen Arnold said.

While Arnold does need to modify her surroundings by using a step stool to monitor a patient or by having specially-ordered small gloves for examinations, her patients do not see her height as a hindrance in the level of care they receive. In fact, they often see her stature as a symbol of her courage and praise the work that she does.

The parent of one of her small patients recently stated on Vitals.com “Dr. Jen is my hero!!!!!” and others who she has worked with echo that sentiment. Described as “caring” and “thorough” in her work, one reviewer describes her as having “a true happiness and loves to share her joy of life with others.”

“I try to be realistic in my limitations, but I don’t let them hinder me from things that I think I can or want to do,” Dr. Jen Arnold said about the impact her height has on her work and personal life.

Recently, Arnold has been candid about her quest to have a baby. She and her husband, Bill Klein, have been undergoing fertility treatments and are seeking a surrogate, since childbirth poses a real risk to Arnold’s life because of her tiny stature.

Both Arnold and Klein, who have average-sized parents say it doesn’t matter to them if their child is tall or not. Like parents of all sizes, they care about one thing only.

“We just want a healthy baby,” Arnold says.

Dr. Jen Arnold & Bill Klein Trying for a Baby

Dr. Jen Arnold & Bill Klein (realitytvwebsite.com)

Bill Klein owns a medical consulting firm and Jen Arnold is a successful neonatologist at Texas Children’s Hospital. They met at a Starbucks a few years ago… and the rest, as the saying goes, was history.  Ever since their marriage, 34-year-old Bill, and his lovely wife, 35-year-old, Jen, had been striving to reach their dream of having a baby. Jen knows that a pregnancy could prove difficult and even life threatening because of her tiny stature but that has not stopped the little couple from trying incessantly.

As the New Year rolls in, we wish them best of luck in reaching their goal of having a family of their very own, they are showing everyone you can do anything you set your heart and mind to!

Recently Jen Arnold said in an interview: “I have had many emails from families who have kids with dwarfism asking for advice. Of course I can’t give them exact medical advice since I am not their physician, but I have been able to guide them to specialists and even speak with their physicians as needed. It’s a very rewarding opportunity. If and when we have a child with skeletal dysplasia I think the education will really increase as many of the medical and orthopedic challenges of dwarfism occur in childhood.”

Dr. Jennifer Arnold of ‘Little Couple’ Looking to Add to the Family

Dr. Jennifer Arnold

Dr. Jennifer Arnold

Every Tuesday night, millions of viewers tune in to watch Dr. Jennifer Arnold and her husband, Bill Klein on the “Little Couple” on TLC.  As per last night’s episode, they revealed that they were excited to add on to the family.  It’s a big decision for any young couple, but especially complicating for them, as it would involve consulting an obstetrician specializing in dwarfism.

The stars of the show traveled to Baltimore’s St. Joseph’s Medical Center (SJMC) to consult Dr. Judith Rossiter, head of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. As we reported at the premier date of the show, Jen Arnold was born with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, or SED, in which a random genetic mutation causes abnormal collagen formation. This led to her dwarfed stature of 3 feet, 2 inches.

This wasn’t their first visit to SJMC, as that is where each of them underwent surgery for their condition, by late Dr. Steven Koptis.  Bill Klein remembers the serendipitous moment of them meeting as kids in the same hospital, only to reunite as adults on a dating site for little people.

According to Vitals.com, Dr. Jennifer Arnold is a highly praised pediatrician, neonatal specialist and assistant professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. She has 17 personal reviews and comments on her profile granting her a well-deserved Patients’ Choice Award.

Dr. Jennifer Arnold – Pediatrician and Star of the Hit Reality Show “Little Couple”

Latest Update: Dr. Jen Arnold and Hubby Saddened By Surrogate’s Miscarriage, Remain Hopeful

Showing the World That Little People Can Lead Big Lives

Dr. Jennifer L. Arnold

Dr. Jennifer Arnold

It’s not the plot of “Little Couple,” the newest reality show on TLC, that is extraordinary, but rather the stars. The show centers on Bill Klein and Jen Arnold whose dwarfism is secondary to the daily trials of being newlyweds and building a life together.

According to The Little People of America, there are an estimated 300 types of dwarfism. Jen, also known as Dr. Jennifer Arnold, was born with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, or SED, in which a random genetic mutation causes abnormal collagen formation. This led to her dwarfed stature; she stands 3 feet, 2 inches.

Arnold, a pediatrician, neonatal specialist and assistant professor of pediatrics, was determined to live a full, productive life despite her size.

“Everyone has to make an individual choice of what is the right career path for them, but it is hard when people choose roles that are primarily perpetuating stereotypes.”

She has more than succeeded in finding a way to participate in the world on her own terms.  Entering medical school she decided to specialize in other small people – the littlest babies in the neo-natal unit.

When children ask her why she is different, she explains that some people are made tall, some are short and she happens to be really little. “Children usually accept that and move on.”

According to Vitals, Jennifer received her medical degree at John Hopkins University and completed an internship in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She is presently the Medical Director of The Pediatric Simulation Center in Texas Children’s Newborn Center as well as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine.

Fans of “Little Couple” can expect to be inspired and entertained as they watch Bill and Dr. Jen move to a new city, buy a home and contemplate starting a family as they negotiate the usual ups and downs newlyweds face.
