(RTTNews) -  Dr. Regina Benjamin received Senate confirmation late Thursday to serve as U.S. surgeon general, making her only the third African-American to hold the position.

She was nominated for the position by President Barack Obama back on July 13 and received unanimous approval during the confirmation vote Thursday night.

At a press conference in July when her nomination was announced, Benjamin said she would “be a voice in the movement to improve our nation’s health care, and our nation’s health, for the future.”

Commenting on Benjamin’s confirmation, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said, “Dr. Benjamin will quickly become America’s doctor as our next Surgeon General. Her deep knowledge and strong medical skills, her commitment to her patients, and her ability to inspire the people she interacts with every day will serve her well as Surgeon General.”

Sebelius added, “She will be an integral part of our H1N1 response effort, and America can expect to see her very soon communicating important information about how to stay healthy and safe this flu season.”

Benjamin’s confirmation took as long as it did because Senate Republicans had blocked her confirmation after the Obama administration barred those insurance companies that take part in the Medicare program from arguing to seniors that Obama’s proposed healthcare reform could mean benefit cuts.

Before receiving the nomination, Benjamin had served as a board member of the American Medical Association. She was the only African-American to serve on the board.

She had also served as chairwoman of the AMA’s Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs.

Dr. Anthony Fauci - On the Return of H1N1 Swine Flu Epidemic

President Obama warned Americans last week to be ready for an aggressive return of the Swine flu, based on findings from the H1N1 Influenza Preparedness Summit. The government is vigilantly preparing for a virus whose outstanding characteristic is its unpredictability.

The Swine flu, or H1N1, has confused and confounded experts from the start. Even its name was misleading causing needless slaughter of pigs in some countries and a general fear of eating pig products which peeved the 97 billion dollar US pork industry.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, who heads research on infectious diseases at the National Institutes of Health, has stated that we are not dealing with the typical seasonal flu. Usually the summer’s warm weather and high humidity makes it hard for a flu virus to survive. According to Vitals.com, Dr. Fauci received his medical degree at Cornell University and completed his internal medicine residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center.

But the spread has continued even though the official flu season ended in March. During the last week in June, Maryland confirmed 166 new cases and some summer camps are feeling the impact with campers being sent home midway. The Muscular Dystrophy Association canceled more than half of its week-long sessions as a preventative measure.

Doctors cannot predict how severe it will get, but Obama’s heavy hitters are working hard to be prepared. This big part of the preparation is the development of a vaccine. The US government has allocated 350 million dollars for H1N1 as well as the seasonal flu.

“I can say with confidence that we will have a vaccine that we will be making a decision on in the fall,” says Dr. Fauci. He reassures everyone that no vaccine will be released to the public until it is proven safe.

For the most part, health officials say, the symptoms of this flu strain have been mild to moderate, with nearly all recovering. The hope is that the virus will not mutate or become resistant to antiviral medication as government health officials continue to closely monitor the situation.

Dr. David Scheiner - Obama’s Doctor Disagrees with His Health Plans

Barack Obama’s personal physician, Dr. David Scheiner, a Chicago based internist, passes Obama on his ‘excellent health’, but fails him in the way he’s building Health Care System for the country.

After 22 years of faithful doctor-patient relationship, Dr. Scheiner is still a huge Obama supporter.  However, being a doctor in an urban low income community mixed with famous clients such as the president himself, the doctor has seen and heard it all.  He worries that Obama is not seeing the harsh issues of those in need.

“I’m not sure he really understands what we face in primary care,” Scheiner says.

Scheiner is also concerned with Obama’s team of health advisers making the most important decisions on behalf of over 300 million people in United States.

“I have a suspicion they pick people from the top echelon of medicine, people who write about it but haven’t been struggling in it.  He doesn’t see all the pain, it’s so tragic out here,” he says. “Obama’s wonderful, but on this one I’m not sure if he’s getting the right input.”
