Dr. Andrew Ordon, the star on CBS’s hit daytime show, The Doctors. He is referred to as “the governor of plastic surgery” and “plastic surgeon to the stars”. Dr. Ordon is teaming up with renowned plastic surgeons Dr. Kami Parsa and Dr. Jay Calvert to form a new foundation, Surgical Friends Foundation. The trio joined together to combat the most difficult, and often life-threatening, reconstructive cases of individuals in need and without health insurance.

The mission of Surgical Friends Foundation is to unite philanthropists, reconstructive surgeons, and patients in need of surgery but without the financial resources. As plastic surgeons with sub-specialty expertise, they are well-suited to perform these life-altering surgeries. Most of the foundation’s patients have physical deformities that are congenital, post-traumatic or acquired in nature.

Their first mission will be to Cambodia where they will handle a full slate of pediatric cases - all children who have been victims of land mines, as a result of decades of civil war. After 20 years of war, one out of every 290 Cambodians is living with a deformity as a direct result of the numerous land mines plaguing their landscape. This is one of the highest ratios in the world

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, 62 year-old NBA Hall of Famer, has developed a rare form of cancer. He is very optimistic that he is able to have the disease under control and lead a healthy life. Last December he was diagnosed with “chronic myeloid leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow that produces cancerous blood cells.”

“The word ‘leukemia’ is a very frightening word,” he said in a phone interview from New York. “In many instances, it’s a killer and it’s something that you have to deal with in a very serious and determined way if you’re going to beat it.”

Studies have shown that this version of leukemia, if monitored closely, allows the patient to live a normal healthy life “without progressing to a more advanced stage.”

Dr. Gary Schiller, a Hematologist and Medical Oncologist at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, said that the latest drug treatment has significantly improved in the past decade.

“Remission of really high quality in 85% of patients . . . [who] function normally with very, very few side effects.”

The special assistant coach with the Lakers, Abdul-Jabbar, said he was having contast hot flashes and sweating profusely, and instead of ignoring the symptoms he addressed them head on.

“By having the hot flashes, I knew something was up. But I didn’t think that it was going to be something as serious as leukemia,” Abdul-Jabbar said.
“If it wasn’t for my health-consciousness, I would have just passed on the effects [of the leukemia symptoms] as something I could ignore,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “But I felt it didn’t make sense to ignore it.”

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is not disheartened about having cancer, and instead living a full dynamic life making people aware of importance of early detection for any type of cancer.

“The fact that you can manage the disease means that you can live your life,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “The fact that you have to go and get your blood analyzed and consult with your doctor might be a minor inconvenience, or you have to take your medication every day. But if you do these things, you can lead a normal live.”

Yankee’s Pitcher Joba Chamberlain Reveals Series-Winning Secret Weapon

Yankee’s pitcher Joba Chamberlain says he knows the secret to his high-level athletic performance.  It is called the Phiten necklace, and you too can own one for around $25.00.  ”It helps us recover and we’re proud to be associated with it,” said Yankee pitcher Joba Chamberlain, a paid endorser of Phiten’s titanium-coated sportswear, after winning the American League pennant Sunday night.  And he is not alone - around 300 major-league players wear a Phiten necklace. Do these necklaces really enhance one’s athletic prowess and promote recovery as advertised?

The necklaces were created in 1982 in Japan by Yoshihiro Hirata, an alternative medicine practicioner and founder of Phiten.   According to the company, the necklaces and bracelets work by stabilizing the electric flow that nerves use to communicate actions to the body.

“All of the messages in your body travel through electricity, so if you’re tired or just pitched nine innings, the electricity isn’t flowing as smoothly as it can,” said Joe Furuhata, a Phiten spokesman. “Our products smooth out those signals.

“There’s no science and physiology,” said Dr. Orrin Sherman, chief of sports medicine at the New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases. “There’s just no way the chemical structure of the body can be influenced by magnets that small. It’s all superstitions with no scientific basis.”

Sherman also noted that when people interact with magnets far more powerful than the Phiten necklaces, like the magnets in a CT (computerized tomography) scan machine, for instance, they do not report any of the effects pitchers and quarterbacks say they receive from the necklace.

However, he does not deny there is the possibility these necklaces really do have some extraordinary powers, the same mystical capabilities attributed to Craig Biggio’s unwashed helmet.   The magical power of placebo.  If the players think they are getting an advantage from the necklace and that gives them increased confidence, then they do in fact get a positive boost from the product.

“You’ve gotta believe in placebo effect,” said Dr. Sherman.
