There are also regular check ups to go to that can help prevent you from getting sick in the first place.

The first step is finding a doctor that’s right for you. Before you start researching doctors in your area, think about the qualities you want in your doctor. Do you prefer a male versus a female doctor? Do they need to speak a second language? How much time do you expect them to spend with you in the room? What about credentials: does it matter to you what school your doctor received their degree from? These are just a few questions to get you started on your doctor search.

Once you’ve figured out the qualities you want in your doctor, you can start searching for great doctors in your area. It’s also good to know where urgent care centers are located near you in case you need to see a doctor before you have one to go to.

So what important doctors should you have ready to call at a moments notice? Read below to find out:

Primary care physician- Regular check ups are important for keeping up with your health. Having your blood pressure and cholesterol checked is essential to making sure your body is functioning normally. This is also the doctor to call should any common illness occur, such as a sore throat or a stomach bug.

Dentist- It’s recommended that you have your teeth cleaned and examined every 6 months to ensure your gums and teeth are healthy. A regular visit to the dentist, along with proper at home cleaning can prevent cavities and gum disease.

OB/GYN (Women)- There are exams, such as a pelvic exam and a Pap smear that should be done every few years, and it’s important to have a Gynecologist that you feel comfortable visiting to administer them. If you are sexually active it’s a healthy practice to have a yearly STD test. Also, if you take any type of birth control pill and have moved to a new area, it’s a good idea to have an OB/Gyn close by to check in with.

Dermatologist- Skin problems can occur quickly and unexpectedly- from a wart that won’t go away to an unexplained rash. Having a skin doctor that you trust and can reach out to when something happens will help you rapidly find a solution to your ailment. It’s also good practice to have regular skin exams to make sure you don’t have any irregular moles or bumps.

Ophthalmologist-  While you may not need to get your eyes checked more than every two years, it’s good to have an eye doctor to call in case you have any issues with your vision or are injured. If you wear glasses, you’ll want someone nearby who you can visit to see if your vision has changed and update your prescription.
