Vitals SunSafetyGear 200x300 Our Favorite Sun Safety Gear & A Selfie Contest PhotoIt’s midsummer, and by now, outdoor activities are in full swing. Whether you like to take it easy by the beach or near home, or enjoy hiking, biking, or running, there’s something for everyone under the sun. But, before you go out, it’s important to take small steps to ensure you’re sun safe.

We’ve compiled a list of favorite sun safety gear to keep you and loved ones protected this summer.

Top Sun Safety Gear Recommendations:

  1. Many people assume sunscreen should only be worn if they’re headed to the beach or spending a lot of time outdoors. However, it’s recommended that you apply sunscreen to your face every day. Yes, every day. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “even on cloudy days, up to 80 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate your skin.”
  2. Sunglasses (with 100 % UV-ray protection). When we consider dangerous side effects of UV rays, often we think about sunburn and skin cancer risk. These are valid concerns, but did you know that UV radiation can also potentially harm eyes?
  3. Wide brimmed hats. Wearing wide-brimmed hats will offer additional protection and coverage over more than just your head. You’ll be able to protect your neck and ears, in addition to covering parts of your face.
  4. Long pants. Even if you’re out and about for only a short period of time, long pants will offer more sun protection than shorts or a skirt. Remember that even on cloudy days, UV rays can still penetrate the skin.
  5. UV clothing. UV clothing refers to a specially-designed fabric that wards off harmful UV rays. Some of the features of these clothes may include wide brims or neck capes for hats, flip-sun collars for shirts, ventilated or looser-fitting clothes to block UV rays, and quick-drying fabrics. • Seek Shade. The sun’s UV light is the strongest between 10 AM and 4 PM, so it’s best to seek shade around those hours. Even on cloudy or hazy days, the sun’s UV rays can still penetrate, so it’s important to seek coverage.
  • Use Broad Spectrum Sunscreen. This sunscreen protects from both UVA and UVB rays. Aim to get coverage of at least 30 SPF.
  • Apply Often. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially when sweating or swimming. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside.
  •  Skin Exams. Perform self-skin exams every month, and if you spot anything unusual or concerning, schedule a visit with your dermatologist to have it examined more thoroughly.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, important skin cancer prevention guidelines also include seeking shade (between 10 AM and 4 PM) as best as possible, using broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen, applying sunscreen 30 minutes before going out (be sure to reapply every two hours or more frequently after swimming or sweating), and get a skin exam every year.
