It’s that time of year again; kids are going back to school. Moms all over the country are falling into collective pools of tears or happy dancing themselves thin as their little ones head off for 4-6 hours a day.
But before you send your precious little ones off to school, there are a few things that will help make going back to school easier.
- Take them to their well visits: take kids to get teeth cleaned and all well visits and vaccinations ahead of time so there is no rushing at the last moment. (Check out our recent guide to kids’ vaccinations)
- Visit school ahead of time: Visit your child’s school the week before school starts back, especially if they are in the lower levels of primary school. Teachers are usually back in school and welcome scheduled meetings with little ones. It will help ease some of the anxiety that comes with meeting a new teacher, new students and a new class on the first day of school. This is also a good time to let kids know your expectations of them for the year.
- Get them invested. Picking out pencils and folders gives kids a sense of control and a place where they can demonstrate s individuality. Have kids help you shop for back to school clothes. Do your children wear a uniform like mine? I give them a shopping spree at Claire’s to buy all the outrageous, personality packed hair accessories they can get their tiny hands on so they feel like they are involved in making some decisions instead of feeling like back-to-school is something that happens to them.
- Start the morning routine now: Get kids used to waking up with alarm, making their bed, eating breakfast, brushing their teeth and getting dressed. Its what works for us in our house the most efficiently.
- Have an after school routine: Empty folders, set aside forms that need to be signed or addresses. My girls come home, change into lounge clothes, have a snack, do homework, have a bit of down time, dinner and the last hour is spent together with my husband and I.
- Get ready for the next day: Lay out school clothes, sign papers and make lunches the night before.
- Have a Bedtime Routine: Bathtime, lay out the next days clothes, brush teeth, reading, talking, hugs and cuddles and absolutely no electronics. Electronics keep the mind racing and make sleep impossible.
