Knee Injury Forces Olympian Shawn Johnson to Retire From Gymnastics

After receiving the all-around silver medal for her showing in the 2008 summer Olympic games and winning the 2009 season of “Dancing with the Stars,” gymnast Shawn Johnson’s return to the games this summer in London was highly anticipated.

However, after struggling to get back to competitive form following a torn ACL suffered during a skiing accident in 2010, Johnson has decided to end her Olympic bid and leave the sport of gymnastics.

Though disappointed to have to call it quits, Johnson still plans on attending the games to support her former teammates:

“It’s not going to be easy to be there and live through it all, but I owe it to the girls to be there. We’re a family and I need to be there for them.”

Johnson’s injury required multiple surgeries, performed by an orthopaedic surgeon.  To find an orthopaedic surgeon who’s right for you, use the Vitals doctor finder.
