The World Health Organization has designated today “World No Tobacco Day” as part of an international effort to to halt the health epidemic caused by smoking.

This year’s theme is “tobacco industry interference,” urging policy-makers and the general public to stay vigilant against efforts by the tobacco industry to undermine tobacco control laws.

Tobacco use is one of the most preventable causes of death, resulting in 6 million lives lost each year. That number is projected to reach 8 million by 2030 if current tobacco use trends continue.
