Is Your Doctor Overweight? If So, Your Treatment Could Be Affected

A study conducted at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Medical Institutions in Baltimore found that doctors who have weight issues themselves are less likely to address weight problems in their patients than doctors with normal BMIs (body mass indices).

The study, published in the journal Obesity, looked at survey responses from 498 physicians. The results showed that 30% of physicians with a normal BMI were likely to broach the topic of a patient’s need for weight loss versus 18% of overweight or obese doctors.

Also, the study found that normal weight doctors felt more confident in their ability to counsel patients on diet (53%) than overweight physicians (37%).

Being overweight or obese can significantly impact a person’s health. If you’re struggling with your weight, use Vitals to find and connect with a general practitioner who will help you get back on track!
