Just in time for the release of the newest Shrek sequel “Shrek Forever After”, McDonald’s was giving away promotional glass cups at just $2 a piece depicting everyone’s favorite characters.

However, US Consumer Product Safety Commission just announced a massive recall this morning on 12 million of the collectibles, warning against using the glasses. It turns out the design images of Princess Fiona, Puss in Boots, Shrek and Donkey on the glasses contains cadmium, a toxic metal found in the paint.

Cadmium is a known carcinogen that research shows also can cause bone softening and severe kidney problems.

“Just small amounts of chemicals may radically alter development,” said Dr. Robert O. Wright, a Pediatric Toxicologist, Emergency Medicine Pediatrician and professor at Harvard University’s medical school and school of public health. (msnbc.msn.com)

7 million of the glasses made by ARC International in Millville, NJ have already been sold, with 5 million more being pulled off the shelves.

Currently Braiman’s Empire State Consumer Project and other groups are petitioning government agencies to set standards on cadmium in children’s jewelry to try to prevent the inevitable hazard.

Please consult an ER or Pediatric Toxicologist near you if you or your child have been affected.
