Snowboard fanatics all watched in horror as Olympic gold medal winner Shaun White slammed his face against the half-pipe during practice at the Winter X Games. Shaun was attempting a double McTwist 1260, an inverted aerial in which he spins three-and-half rotations. Luckily, he landed on his helmet and it went flying but he wasn’t seriously injured.
Dr. Robert Cantu, a professor of neurosurgery at Boston univeristy Medical School remarks about Shaun’s talents in his game and risk level,
“The athletes are definitely more skilled than ever before. They’ve taken all these activities to a new level, But they’ve also definitely increased the risks.”
One huge caveat for all his masterful flips, Dr. Cantu’s team discovered that athletes who sustain multiple concussions during their career are at increased risk for chronic traumatic encephalopathy. C.T.E. is a degenerative brain disease with symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s. Several athletes at the 2010 Olympics did sustain mild concussions during practice but continued to compete nonetheless.
