Before traveling, he we would identify children’s hospitals here in the U.S. that could receive injured children from Haiti.

“In a disaster like this you see the initial trauma victims – patients who are critically injured, but as the living conditions deteriorate, then you have to worry about diseases like cholera from tainted water, poor sewage, E. coli and other diseases that spread because there are no proper living conditions. The second wave is when disease spreads,” Dr. Anderson said. (foxnews)

    Tom Taylor
Volunteer – Hands On Disaster Response – Boston Office http://www.hodr.org

    Greetings from Hands On!

I apologize for the delay in responding to your inquiry. I’m getting more emails than I can handle quickly. Public interest in assisting Haitians in their hour of need is just amazing.

Thank you for your interest in working with us in Haiti . Here’s our current status:

We will be sending in an Assessment Team this weekend to see how and where HODR can help. We have worked in Haiti before and have good contacts with other NGO’s. Most of our volunteers are not trained in disaster response, so the assessment process is especially complicated – we need to find a building to house volunteers, we need to find staff to cook and do laundry, we need the local government’s approval to operate, etc. This process sometimes takes us 2-3 weeks. To be honest, it unfortunately sometimes ends in the failure to find a suitable situation to operate in.

We have delayed our travel to Haiti because we do not want to interfere with ongoing Search and Rescue efforts.

A major part of our assessment will be to determine if we can operate a safe and productive volunteer project, given the chaotic situation we know exists after such a major catastrophe. The US State Department’s Travel Warning is instructive. It talks about violence, kidnapping and the lack of an effective police force. The chaos of an earthquake will probably exacerbate this danger, and we will need to figure out if we can keep our volunteers safe.

As you know, we are currently working in Indonesia and this puts a strain on our International project staff, but we’ll sort that out. You should also know that we are a very small organization. I’ve received hundreds of volunteer inquiries already. If we do open a project in Haiti , we would be very stretched to host all of the people who’ve contacted me. This too, will have to be sorted out.
