Christmas Miracle: Dr. Alonso & Dr. Skaro Save Two With One Liver

A seventeen year old boy and a two year old baby were given the gift of life by Dr. Estella Alonso & Dr. Anton Skaro when the  Chicago doctors performed life-saving liver transplants on both the boys simultaneously. The boys were fitted with a portion of the same liver and the boys were are recovering from the surgery. Dr. Alonso specializes in  Pediatric Gastroenterology and Pediatric Transplant Hepatology and Dr. Skaro is a surgeon and the medical director of the Children’s liver transplant program at the Children’s Memorial Hospital.

The first recipient was 2-year-old Frank Sroka of Bridgeport, Il who was born with the fatal liver disease biliary atresia and was at the top of a national registry of patients awaiting liver transplants. The 17 year old was born with the rare liver disease primary sclerosing cholangitis and was No. 86 on the awaiting liver transplant list. The teenager was lucky to be the perfect match for the other part of the liver.
