Dr. Raymond Cook

Twenty year-old woman from Winston-Salem was killed on Friday, September 11th in a fatal car crash caused by a middle aged drunk doctor.

Dr. Raymond Cook was driving 85 mph in his Mercedes Benz when he ran a red light and hit Elena Bright Shapiro who was entering onto the highway at 20 mph with a speed limit of 45 mph.  She was brought to the hospital where she died moments later.

Ellen Shapiro was an accomplished ballerina with Carolina Ballet. They released a statement in honor of Elena:

Elena Bright Shapiro

Elena Bright Shapiro

“The entire Carolina Ballet organization (is) devastated by the loss of Elena. She was a beautiful young girl and will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to her family.”

Cook is being charged with multiple offenses:

“Cook was arrested on suspicion of DWI. He has been charged with death by motor vehicle, DWI, failure to reduce speed, careless and reckless driving.”

According to Vitals.com, Dr. Raymond Cook is a otolaryngologist and plastic surgeon at WakeMed Facial Plastic Surgery. He is also an assistant professor at UNC School of Medicine. READ MORE ABOUT DR. RAYMOND COOK.

God bless Elena & her family. Tomorrow marks 7 months since her death. Although she is dead in body, she is not dead in spirit. Please remember her family & pray for them.

I do not know any recent information on this case...do any of you?

    Dear Elena,
You are truly missed and loved by this community where you grew up.
We are all at loss because we can no longer see your beauty, the many, many years (and hours) you and your mother dedicated to training your body to dance so gracefully, your expertise as a ballerina and your contributions to the world of art that you were so perfectly suited for. We miss your glowing smile, your angelic face, your warm laugh, your soft touch, your love, your radiance and your grace. Not one of us here, ever wanted you leave us so soon, never ever so unexpectedly, so painfully or so tragically. We know that your are in heaven in a special place God reserves only for prima ballerinas. Because we all know that is what you would have become. Just as your mother was before you. We are deeply saddened that you are not still here to fulfill your dreams and the family tradition of being a ballerina or being a daughter, sister, Aunt, girlfriend and friend. You have given us so much already and yet you still had so very much left to give. We can only imagine the suffering this has caused your parents and family. You are loved and so missed by all of us. We love you. We think of you often. You shall never be forgotten. We wish you and your family peace.

In your loving memory. The Community of Winston-Salem.

Raymond made a huge error of judgement. Lots of folks drive at 90, lots of folks drink and drive. The mistake was to try and do both excessively and in a built up area too. But if you were supposed to be with your wife but were out drinking with, let's say, "someone from the office", it is tempting to race on home. If it was your first DWI you might think stupid but unlucky, but after having been charged twice before, you'd think you'd either not drive after drinking, or have the sense to drive at 20 all the way home.

Would you then have the sense never to perform surgery after drinking? Do you have that level of control? Makes you wonder doesn't it? Such a shame to lose a very good capable doctor, but probably right if he can't demonstrate good sense.

Utterly reckless combination and sad for everyone.

I feel neglected, not one comment mentions ME (SATAN) being the judge to decide Raymond Cook's fate! All this talk about God God God...JESUS! Enough already, I mean really, why do you think Florida and God boy douchebag Tim Tebow did not play in the National Championship this year? Well I don't like Tim Tebow and decided Florida would NOT win. Those of you blinded by religion likely stopped reading by now...losers. Anyway, neither God nor I (Satan) controlled what happened to beautiful Elena Shapiro. Since the former Dr. Cook took it upon himself to decide, I (Satan) will now intervene. It's okay, God and I discussed it, he has other things to worry about, like trying to convince shrews he has a powerful effect over their lives...God has NO control of ANYTHING. He even laughs at you, God's bumper sticker on his Pinto says "Don't be an Asshole!". It's really pretty simple and that's my (Satan's) point, YOU have control, just like NC Prisoner Tyrone "The Jackammer" Washington will have control of making sweet sodomy love to his new cellmate, Raymond Cook while Tyrone and his new girlfriend (Cook) celebrate Kwanzaa; after which they will cuddle like Romeo and Juliet sharing forbidden love...Do you think that's what Shakespeare meant by, "A man loves the meat in his youth that he cannot endure in his age."? After all, the Tyrone's meat may indeed be tough to endure.
Let this be a lesson to you kids out there, if you don't want to be sodomized in prison, don't do be an arrogant criminal prick. If you do want to be sodomized, join the Catholic Church.
Love you all (really, I do), Satan.

The reason it is negative on this site is because the guy has no idea what he had done...he will never know what it is like to loose a daughter to a drunk driver most likely....all he and his wife are counting on and waiting for is the easiest way out of all of this without losing the most....they will, at some point in their lives go back to living the life of the rich once many years go by...this tragedy has not changed their hearts or their choices as far as what is important in life...it isn't the big house, the nice cars, the fancy trips, the private schools, and the list goes on....what is a shame is that they will try and live life the way they always have....it is about money to these folks, bottom line period!!!
  • Tonya
It's amazing that people have so much to say that's negative. Holding a gun to someone's head and killing them is intentional. Getting into a car and driving is careless and stupid. Once you're drunk you usually have no idea what you're doing. Either way both families are suffering tremendously and I am sick and tired of the stupid things people say. He is human, he made a mistake which is something he has to live with. Shut up and let God be the judge!

downtownrs : Raymond Cook did not pass himself off as a plastic surgeon. He was trained and licensed as an otolaryngologist with specialty training in facial plastics. Do you know anything about credentialing.......I believe WakeMed verifies credentials before granting privileges and allowing physicians to practice in any given area!!! He was not a plastic surgeon and did not do plastic procedures below the neck. I have worked in OR's for many years and my personal opinion is that I rather be in the company of an otolaryngologist anyday over a plastic surgeon.

@forgive.... Yes I am prepared to die and meet god, whoever SHE might be. The point is that you judge people every day... I am sure that you judged me when I said that god is a she..... Yes you did, admit it. You probably said, "poor guy, he is lost," thus you judged me.....

As for abolishing everything.... Wasn't it Jesus that said, "It's not what goes into the body that defiles a man, but what comes out." And I don't think it is referencing "stinky dirt".

So Dr. Cook is not a "real" criminal??? Dr. Cook intentionally drank. He intentionally drove while intoxicated..... And caught FOR THE THIRD TIME!!! How many times did he drive in this manner and not get caught? That is a criminal act. What would Jesus do? I think that he would say Dr. Cook has proven himself unworthy of another chance. Let the law of the land be carried out. Even the adulteress was told to sin no more.... Dr. Cook obviously didn't read that part of the good book. I do agree with you..... It does no good to scream, "Let him rot in hell," for there is no hell. Hey did you just judge me again????

The way I see it, I can forgive him, but he has proven that he has no respect for anybody else but himself and I want nothing like that on the road. Like King George said, "Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice....ya ya you can't fool me again..." But fool me three times??? Fine give him his sentence.... Just don't let him drive again for the rest of his life. And/or, "After he gets out of prison, he should be forced to do freebie cleft palate surgeries in Ecuador for the rest of his life."

I pass by that intersection every day on the way to/from work. He was rounding a curve at a high rate of speed heading westbound on Strickland. The impact caused the protective metal guard rail to peel back about 20 feet. A horrible tragedy.
He should be forced to look at the crime scene photos every day of his sentence to remind him of what he did. After he gets out of prison, he should be forced to do freebie cleft palate surgeries in Ecuador for the rest of his life.
  • downtownrs
i think it's telling that this guy passed himself off as a plastic surgeon and even wake med called him a plastic surgeon to the patients they referred to him and yet, his specialty is otolaryngology (ent), which doesn't require the same amount or type of training.

he's given plastic surgeons a bad rap. they aren't typically swashbucklers.

    Forgive,
You have no idea how many of us on this post know him.....the fact remains that our justice system is backwards and money talks!!!! that is the part that is frustrating and extremely sad. I am a believer and know who has the last say, but there is no amount of words that can be said at this point that will take away what has happened to all involved...I know that Dr. Cook will have to ultimately pay for this, but think about this for a second....how are you going to feel when you hear that dr. cook has been charged with another DWI in many years from now? Do you now understand why it is hard to not make judgement and to not feel the feelings we do about him???
  • Forgive
I just want to say No One!!!! should Judge anyone ..Thats Gods Job . Take the Plank out of your own eye and look at your own inperfections which i am sure you have many, before you pass judgement toward others .

Yes it was wrong ,yes Dr Cook derserves punishment , but really ya'll need to step back and take a look in the mirror. I i have lost loved ones in my life as well and it is tragic , but God has a reason for everything that happens and we are not to question it . But the Word specifically says that if you hold unforgiveness in your heart you may not enter the Kingdomof God . So to all you haters ..stop it .

I am a previous patient to Dr Cook ..from a Dr/patient standpoint he was a great man , did not know his personal life ..nor did you ,so stop passing judgement . Think about allthe real criminals that skate off and murder on purpose and all the child abuse / murders that happen everyday .. This was an accident .. yes he made a bad choice , however he has to deal with that and the consequences of answering to God the remainder of his life ..Noone should ROT IN HELL as some of you have said above . Thats just being rude . ask your self this WHAT WOULD JESUS DO???? iF ANYTHING i THINK ALL BARS , ALCOHOL, DRUGS ,CIGGARETTES, POT, ETC Should be outlawed ..but thats not my call...In the meanwhile examine yourselves and your own lives ..if you were to die today are you prepared to stand before God ?? Do you have Christ in your heart ?? something to think about . My heart & prayers go out to the Cook Family & Shapiro family . Have Faith & LET GOD HEAL YOUR HEARTS .

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The Raleigh doctor accused of killing a woman in a DWI crash did not show up Monday morning for court because he's in rehab.
The prosecutor and Raymond Cook's attorney told the judge Cook is in an out-of-state alcohol treatmet. The court will review the case again next month.
Last month Cook said he would voluntarily enter an alcohol treatment center. That was days after Elena Shapiro died. Police say Cook's car hit her car on September 11 as she drove on Strickland Road in Raleigh.
Investigators say Cook was traveling 80 mph and was drunk at the time of the collision.

    Verdict,

Sometimes Attorneys DO try to push it out as far as possible. You are correct in thinking that it does give the issue a chance to"die down". However in this case I hope that doesn't work. We owe it to Elena, ourselves, our neighbours, our kids and the general public to NOT allow this to go away quietly. I hope his case is an example to everyone that life can change entirely based on one bad decision.
  • A Different Observer
Regarding the “let’s not punish his family” comments: Wouldn’t you make that comment in any criminal prosecution? Think of the worst criminal you can imagine. I am sure that Charles Manson had some nice family members somewhere who were saddened and suffered because of what he did and the punishment he received. Should that have reduced his punishment? Of course not. If a crime is a serious one – and this one is as serious as it gets, an innocent young life was taken – once he is found guilty, the perpetrator should be punished in whatever fashion is necessary to deter not only him but other people from committing similar deliberate crimes. And judging from the DWI problems here in Raleigh, apparently we are not doing enough to deter drunk drivers.
  • verdict
yes, agreeded he made a choice and that choice should have consequences....it will be interesting to see what his punishment will be...does anyone know how it works when cases continue to be pushed into the next year? evidently because we haven't heard anything about this case, it seems as though his attorneys are trying to put it off as long as they can to make it go away from people's minds....perhaps there is truth to letting things "die" down as to what the verdict will be? does anyone know about these types of issues with our court system?
  • Raleighneighbour
Regardless of him being an alcoholic - he chose to drink and drive. We're all responsible for our actions and he needs to go to prison for murdering this poor girl. She deserves justice.
  • US2SAF
    Carolina Nurse,

Trust me, he'll get more then a "slap on the wrist." There's not ONE SINGLE FACT in this case working in his favor to make a judge want to show him ANY leniency, NOT ONE. I spoke with an attorney who has been following the facts in this case, and he said he doesn't think he will get any less than 10 years, and wouldn't be suprised if he got 15-20. Being a felony charge, he has to serve AT LEAST half the time before being eligible for parole, so he is definitely going to do significant time.

It's really a tragedy all the way around, an innocent and promising young life cut short, one family who will be heartbroken forever over that loss, and another family who will lose their father and husband for many years. We should all remember those things amongst the vitriol that is posted.
  • Carolina Nurse
Dear Different Observer - AMEN!!! It is SO sad. I hope to soon hear what is coming of this case. I hope that the law makes an example of Cook & really cracks down on all of these drunk drivers. He needs more than a slap on the wrist.
  • A Different Observer
One thing that I am wondering is whether our community is really opposed to drunk driving and the horrors that it causes. The outcome of this case will answer the question of whether we, as a community, are willing to tolerate drunks on our streets that kill and maim our family members, friends, and neighbors, or whether we actually want this to stop.

If we really want to try to put a stop to drunk drivers on our streets, we need to send a message to these people that consider it their God-given right to drink to excess and drive on our streets, again and again. And this case - right here - is the opportunity to send that message, loudly and clearly.

Because there are more drunk drivers out there, and they are on our streets right now. If we want to make them think twice before driving drunk - if we really want to save lives - we need to send them a message.
  • verdict
Regardless of the fact that he is an alcoholic, his wife, who knew he drank every friday during golf games should have been more vocal to him to put a stop to his drinking as a whole. I realize it wasn't her fault but his friends and family should have addressed his drinking because clearly he has a problem...yes, this was a tragic accident, it is just very concerning to think that his drinking may never stop AND he could very easily be back on the road again and not to mention practice medicine...even if it were in another state or country...

Merriam-Webster defines “accident” as “an unforeseen and unplanned event or circumstance” distinguished by “lack of intention or necessity; chance”. Dictionary.com defines “accident” as “any event that happens unexpectedly, without a deliberate plan or cause.” Wikipedia describes “accident” using adjectives such as “unexpected, unusual and unintended” and phrases such as “without apparent or deliberate cause but with marked effects.”

Assume you were to fire a rifle into a house as you drive by it. Would it be an “accident” if you shot and killed someone inside the house? I think not. Anyone of normal intelligence knows that, if you fire a rifle into a house you are likely to hit and kill someone. Which is, incidentally, why it is against the law.

Now let’s look at this tragedy: Prior DWIs: Did he quit drinking and driving, knowing it was dangerous to other people? No, he deliberately continued to do it. Prior reckless driving charges: Did he quit driving recklessly, knowing it was dangerous to other people? No, he deliberately continued to do it. After drinking to excess at the Raleigh Country Club, did he ask for a ride home, knowing how dangerous he was to other people on the road? No he deliberately drove drunk. Where did he drive? To another bar, to get even drunker. When that bar cut him off, was he at least shocked or embarrassed enough to call a cab or ask for a ride? No, after his companion’s request for “to go” cups was rejected, he got behind the wheel and drove drunk. Deliberately, not accidentally. Did he try to drive slowly or at least within the speed limit, knowing that he was drunk enough to be cut off by a bartender? No, he sped through a residential area at 85 miles per hour. Who could be surprised that he hit and killed someone?

Accident? Not by a long shot. This tragedy is EXACTLY what happens when someone deliberately does what Mr. Cook did. Which is, incidentally, why this is against the law.

    To coworker.....

I'm glad that you never saw Dr. Cook "impaired" at work, but I know of a situation recently that could have been the result of his operating following drinking the night before. The niece of a friend of mine went to him for sinus problems. During the sinus surgery, he nicked the membrane surrounding her brain in multiple places. When problems developed, she had to have another surgery....performed by him....to repair the nicks and install a shunt for drainage. This second surgery was THE SAME DAY HE KILLED THE SHAPIRO GIRL! And he messed it up, too. Ever hear of alcoholics having "the shakes"? This young woman continued to have problems and had her third surgery the day before yesterday.....by different surgeons, thank God.....and they found that the "repairs" were performed so poorly that her brain was actually protruding from one of the tears, so they had to put a patch on the membrane. I believe that this young mother was almost another casualty of his, and who knows how many others are out there? So, I have serious doubts about his professionalism and particularly about his judgment. This sadly points out a severe lack in our judicial system when even multiple DUI offenders are given only a slap on the wrist and allowed back out on the road.

    US2SAF-

You are about the only intelligent blogger on this website. Thank you for your insightful comments.

I am sick about this tragedy. Mostly for the Shapiro family who lost their beautiful daughter- I have a 20 yr old child myself. Nothing will ever ease their pain and loss. May the Lord bless and keep them during this terrible time of suffering.

Having said that, I know Dr Cook in a professional capacity and have worked with him for several years. I so respected him that I sent family and friends to him- something I would never have done if he had ever seemed impaired at work which he NEVER did. He was always kind, compassionate, professional, and a pleasure to work with. I have known several people who were "weekend" alcoholics- people who could stay sober all week long but who once they started to drink on Friday night, could not stop until they were completely inebriated. You might be surprised how many people fit into this category. My point is- I believe he is an alcoholic but the suggestion that he operated on people while drunk is completely absurd. Again- a glaring example of people who don't know anything personally about the situation running their mouths and making wildly rediculous accusations.

Finally - I am sickened by the comments of people wanting him to burn in hell, die of anal cancer, end up as someone's bitch in prison, and by the way- screw his innocent wife and children who did NOTHING wrong but will pay for this as if they did. I was under the impression that GOD and GOD alone will someday decide who ends up in hell but apparently He is subcontracting out His supreme authority to some of the posters to this website.

If it makes any of you blood thirsty, judgemental bloggers feel better, I believe that Dr Cook's life is completely ruined and that he will suffer in prison for a long time. I am certain that if he could trade places with Elena Shapiro he would do so in a minute.

Don't know if any else has brought this up, but this was Dr. Cook's THIRD DUI. Yes, clearly an alcoholic, and no, obviously didn't plan for this to happen...but how SELFISH to screw up once, twice and NOT go straight to rehab to stop the addiction? He deserves whatever sentence the NC court system has the power to give him and that probably isn't enough.

Dr. Cook did not wake up and say "I'm going out to kill someone with my vehicle". This man has a desease and should be treated accordingly. Tax payers dollars to will house this man in jail whereas we as a society/judicial system could utilize his license/profession to continue to heal while he gets the help...healing he needs to recover from this desease. While her death is tragic we continue to burden our jails with people with drug/alcohol deseases. Overcrouding of our institutions with functional individuals continues to be a problem. Let's look at alternatives. I say, lets release all non-drug dealers, all non-violent/sex crime, etc...recovery treatment is more cost-effective than incarceration.

    North Raleigh Resident,

I'll preface this post by stating that Dr. Cook did indeed kill Elena Shapiro through his blatant disregard for the law, and HE SHOULD AND WILL pay dearly legally, financially, and personally. I don't think anybody here is asserting that he should be allowed to "abdicate responsibility" because he was drinking. The forensic psychiatric guidelines clearly state that culpability in the commision of a crime cannot be dismissed in situations where someone knowingly consumed a mind altering drug or alcohol prior to commiting that crime. To put it clearly, you're not "getting off" because you were under the influence.

Moving along, please don't continue to show your ignorance by saying things like depression and obesity are not diseases. There are definite and WELL DOCUMENTED chemical neurotransmitters involved in these conditions. There is a wealth of unbiased scientific data to support this. They are not conditions in which people simply "cannot cope," as you say. Whatever it is you do for a living, stick to it, and try to certail your comments on things about which you clearly do not have any expertise.
  • In Recovery 10 plus years
SO alcoholism is not a disease, neither is depression. I guess you are a mentally healthy, skinny person who doesn't touch alcohol right? Ignorance is bliss.......

The good Doc's next court date is October 5th. His Attorney will ask for an extension as he will not be out of rehab by then. Rehab that will help him with his disease, and help him to accept his responsiblity and accountability for this tradegy.

Alcoholism is as much as a disease as is depression or obesity (all of them are not). Pharm companies love to name such issues as diseases for obvious reasons. Cancer is a disease.......Legionares is a disease......The difference is quite obvous. Alcoholism, depression, and/or obesity is the result of people not being able to fundamentally deal with issues in their lives.......free will. Some people choose to deal with these issues by analyzing or thinking through the issue and adequately dealing with them.......By calling and refering to these issues as diseases just misplaces the blame and the responsibility of the individual to deal and places it on the "medical community". It is easier for humans to call something a disease so they don't have to fight or deal with the situation. For reference purposes the following are not diseases.
  • In Recovery 10 plus years
Dear North Raleigh Resident | September 20, 2009 at 9:53 am

Alcoholism IS a disease. What lunatic would CHOOSE to have a life of complete misery with this infliction. It does NOT allow a person to "abdicate" their accountability. Get a clue before throwing out such blatant ignorance.

"Everybody should resist the urge to refer to Ray as a doctor. He is not a doctor anymore and should not be refered to as one. He is a common criminal. Alcholism is not a “disease”, but rather a choice. It is refered to as a disease so that people can abdicate accountability and responsibility for their actions associated with drinking"
  • US2SAF
The comments some have made about how he may be treated unequally or may not get what he deserves are simply ridiculous. Most of this seems to be based in a disdain for his monetary success preceding the tragedy. Dr. Cook has already lost VERY MUCH, and will lose MUCH MUCH MORE in the weeks, months, and years to come. He has surrendered his medical license and resigned his positions at UNC and WakeMed. He will never practice medicine again. He has also completely lost his reputation and disgraced his wife and family, who incidentally did no wrong. I've spoken with an attorney who stated that based on what has been reported, he can see him getting NO LESS THAN 10 years in prison, and possibly as much as 15-20. Lastly, there is the inevitable wrongful death suit that will come, finishing him off financially. He will pay DEARLY, as HE SHOULD, so let's cut the talk about how he won't. Justice will be served. I guess it just always bothers me in cases like this where the people who hate doctors just seem to crawl out of the woodwork and spit forth baseless generalizations.

Finally, in all of our anger and vitriol, let's not forget the irreplaceable loss of the Shapiro family, one from which they will likely NEVER fully recover. As a father, I know that if it had been my child, I would be profoundly saddened and changed forever.

Cook's money isn't gonna save his ass in jail, is it? Who cares what kind of money he has? That has SHIT to do with the fact that he took someone's life. All that success he has doesn't matter when he puts that orange suit on everyday. The fact that he is "successful" doesn't decrease the value of Elena's life.

There's no more to the story than he was drinking & driving & he hit & killed her. The rest of the details don't matter. I hope that all of the people out there defending his actions never have to deal with the death of a loved one by a drunk driver. Money & power is a load of bullshit when you don't have enough sense to be responsible.

Who the hell would be jealous of him? Look at him now. His life & his family's life is over b/c of his STUPIDITY. Another family has to deal with Elena's loss for the rest of their lives. Fuck the fact he has money. He was drinking & driving. Whether he was on a benz or a pinto...he hit her, he killed her. He drank & drove. All that money he has is spoken for now.

Anyone with a blood alocohol level approaching 160 should not have been allowd to leave the bar except in a taxi. Aren't bartenders supposed to make that call??? ESP when the drunk is asking for drinks to go????

This is a tragedy for everyone... no amount of Monday morning quarterbacking can change the facts....I hurt for the girl's grieving family and the doctor's family who will live in humility and shame and grief forever because of the numerous bad mistakes ex-doctor Ray Cook made.

Everybody should resist the urge to refer to Ray as a doctor. He is not a doctor anymore and should not be refered to as one. He is a common criminal. Alcholism is not a "disease", but rather a choice. It is refered to as a disease so that people can abdicate accountability and responsibility for their actions associated with drinking.

Interesting, why are you so upset about people with money? If someone works hard to further themselves, why are you so against them? This is probably because you are jealous! It is not too late. You can become sucessful, but you will have to work for it! Now get off your lazy, blaming others ass and get to work!

'Interesting' - I believe some people are trying bully antics to get a stupid point across, I just sit back & giggle at those comments, how about you???

'Don' - I second that!!! You are right on the money.

'Something to think about' - I don't think anyone is judging him as a physician...we're not talking about the surgeries he performed. We're talking about him being a responsible citizen. I bet he was a fantastic surgeon. He just made a poor choice. It's unfortunate he has to be the example. There are many like him that don't get caught. That's the sad reality of our society.

SOOOOOOOOOOSAAAAAAD - tell us what we don't know so we can all quit being so judgemental.

    To Something to Think About:
And not every one in NC is a Christian. There is a separation of church and state. The good brother Cook will not be able to use church as protection. To hide behind a scripture, “he who has never sinned may throw the first stone," does nothing to address the FACT that this is the THIRD time he was CAUGHT DUI. What are we to do with that scripture? What does it practically mean? Jesus was talking to the Pharisees to make a point that they were being hypocritical and before you kill, her be honest with yourself. Give her a chance to redeem herself. You forgot to mention right after he said that to the Pharisees, Jesus then told the prostitute to go and sin NOMORE. The good Dr. must not have read that part. He just proved that he had total disregard for public safety. Dr. Cook, when sober, would most likely agree that DUI is not a good thing to do, and, he would have probably agreed that anyone caught doing that would have to pay the consequences. And, he probably would recommend, if he were on a jury, that the full extent of the law be exercised if the defendant was convicted for the third time DUI and killed an innocent victim. He wouldn't want that convicted felon back on the street to potentially harm his family, friends, or anyone else. So it's not, "Judge not lest ye be judged." It's about protecting the public as well as serving the time society has deemed worthy of the crime.

    To soooooooooooooodsad:

What's not to judge? Hate the sin not the sinner???? OK fine. He still goes to jail to protect us from his inability to judge HIMSELF. I judge myself all the time and at times I consider myself to be a bastard. But at least I know not to get into a vehicle that I can't operate safely.

So tell us so we can stop the judgement. What is "much more to this tragic incident than any of you know about," that will justify or excuse his actions? Are we to let him off with yet another slap on the wrist?
  • Lisa
I thank God everyday for the officer who pulled me over and arrested me for drunken driving. I am BLESSED that I didn't hurt anyone. I am not proud of myself but I honestly believe that had I gotten away with it that night I would have continued to drink and drive. As I learnt, there is NO excuse for drinking and driving. I lost my driving priviledge for one year and paid a fine. I haven't had a drink since that night. I am terrified of relapsing and waking up in Dr. Cook's shoes someday.
    God Bless both families.

I live very close to where the accident occurred and normally drive through that intersection several times a day. Focusing on his blood alcohol content is irrelevant. Anyone who is doing 90mph on that section of road is blatantly irresponsible.

    hello,

this man is destined for jailtime, and if he doesn't get any, then this country's legal system is completely fucked up.

    that is all.
  • Something to Think About
I am not going to defend Dr. Cook's actions, however I will say we all make mistakes. Unfortunately this one ended in tragedy. My condolences to the Shapiro family for their loss. No parent should ever have to bury their child.

All that being said, Dr. Cook's BAC has not been released. No one knows if he was driving with a 1.8 or a .09. It was a Friday at 8:00 PM. He probably got off work only hours before and then went ot happy hour. At happy hour he may have had 2 or 3 drinks. That is enough to put you over the legal limit but we all know people drive with 2 glasses of wine or beers in them all the time. It is ridiculous to assume the man was belligerently intoxicated. He made a mistake and now he will pay the consequences.

A lot of people are being very hypocritical about this whole situation. We cannot judge him as a physician by one bad decision. I'm not from North Carolina but I know most people here pride themselves on being Christian. Was it not Jesus that said, "he who has never sinned may throw the first stone." It is obvious to me that everyone writing on this discussion board is perfect and has never sinned, or made a mistake...

I'm not saying that Raymond Cook isn't responsible for this horrible trajedy, but since he was obviously very intoxicated and not able to make a wise decision to get a ride home, where is that woman he left the bar with and why did she let him get into an automobile? Did she also drive home drunk too? In my opinion, there is SOME contributory negligence here. Why didn't someone just call the police to make sure this intoxicated man did not get behind the wheel? It was a hige risk for him to drive and no one acted. How sad. I know it is still his fault ultimately. And, how many times has the wife let him drive home drunk? Seems to be a lot of denial going on. Very sad.

    Dear Observer:

When you die from that dreaded asthma attack, the public will make sure that smoker gets on a nicotine patch so that they won't smoke anymore. We (the public) will also make sure that the smoker apologizes for not intentionally killing you b/c after all, it WAS an accident. So that will make it all ok. Then your family can move on.

What kind of argument is that? He knew what he was doing. He had done it so many times before, but he figured it would never backfire. He thought he was invincible. Well, he's not. He did murder her. Not intentionally, but he still did.

It is a tragedy for both parties. It could have been prevented.
  • Observer
I have a disease called asthma, and I am highly allergic to tobacco smoke. Since everyone here is writing about killing people, I thought you should know smokers are killing me. I have to hold my breath when leaving public buildings, cannot allow fresh air in my car, cannot go to outdoor restaurants etc… Smoking triggers asthma attacks and I could wreck my car or have a severe enough reaction that I could die. So for any of you bloggers who smoke PLEASE STOP SMOKING TONIGHT! Your actions are doing to me exactly what you are blaming Dr. Cook of.

Dr. Cook placed bilateral tubes in my son's ears just last month and we saw him for follow up just 2 days before this accident. Had he been drinking prior to our appointment? If I had only known of his DWI history and reckless behavior I would have never allowed him to touch my son. Disgusting! He is a murderer and deserves not one bit of sympathy. The choice he made cost a young innocent woman her life! I would like to know why Piper's tavern management did not MAKE SURE he did not get behind the wheel. Doesn't this bar and the "woman he was with" and the country club bar hold responsibility/liability as well??? This is sooo tragic and sad!
  • Observer
Michelle, I hope you had a DD that night or did you stayed sober?

This is such a tragedy, an amazing young woman killed by a thoughtless drunk who could have ridden with a designated driver and chose not to. The charges have been upped to second-degree murder, which holds a maximum of 40 years in prison (or close to it). Dr. Cook had two priors in the 80s and I can't comprehend why his bail was dropped to $250,000, he should remain in jail.

A drunk driver hit my husband in the early 90s, she passed out behind the wheel after the accident, and was driving with a suspended license. He stopped at a light and she rear-ended him going 45 mph, his car totaled, he was in shock and has back problems to this day. The band equipment stored in the back of his car cushioned the impact and saved his life. As I recall the woman’s blood alcohol level was between .25 and .30.

The woman had her license revoked and still got behind the wheel of a car; his car was slammed some 50 feet through an intersection, Ms. Shapiro's car traveled 225 feet. Can you imagine the scene? At least Dr. Cook feels remorse and turned himself in. He is a danger to society and has left people in utter devastation; he should be locked up for a very long time. My heart goes out to Elena Shapiro’s family and friends, as well as the children of Dr. Cook.

To PNC: I appreciate your clear, concise, thoughtful and thought provoking commentary. I am glad that you decided to say your peace. Your words on family and community responsibility are powerful. This man held a documented disregard for others for a very long time. Surely, those around him must have ignored the truth and responsibility that needed attention.

My husband is a physician and always holds himself to a higher standard than necessary to make sure that his behavior represents the profession he has chosen to practice.

Before I read your thoughts I was "feeling the devastation" of both families. I now have a clearer idea of who actually needs my healing thoughts. I am feeling sadness for the three young girls in this nightmare. Elena and her family are in my prayers. I will continue to wish for whatever can protect Abigail and Ashley Cook, two additional victims of this tragedy. They are not part of the community who should have known and acted.

I personally take offense to the comment..."another doctor who thinks he's above the law"....where do you get off saying that about doctors?? Yes, he is a doctor....but it is totally not justified by saying doctors think they are above the law. There are plenty of lawyers, politicians, policemen, engineers, electricians, IT people, sales people, ceo's, managers, executives, you get the point....who think they are above the law. It is NOT the profession that created his "above the law" attitide.

Seems there is so much anger regarding this trajedy, and that will not change anything or bring healing to anyone. This man should have had enough sense that his behavior was dangerous, but a DRUNK doesn't have any sense. It's too bad that all those who surrounded this DRUNK didn't make the effort to intervene. Blaming is so easy to do, perhaps it gives you a sense of feeling better about yourself. The reality is that Dr Cook is to blame, unfortunately he will suffer as well as his family. How sad that there is some sense of superiority in those who gain pleasure judging and blaming. This is a trajedy for everyone involved...period. It is senseless. Dr cook is responsible. He will definitely pay the price for his behavior. It is sad to say that there are many drunk drivers who don't really pay the price. Elena's life was ended by a senseless act from another drunk driver. If you know someone who has a drinking problem, make it your responsibility to intervene. Blaming is LAME...offer your compassion instead. How would you feel if this was your brother, cousin, son, or friend? Hating doesn't make it better. May you have a heart to offer prayers to the shapiro & Cook families as well as Dr Cook. Dr Cook is a lost soul and looks like he was lost even when it appeared he had it all. He caused the death of Elena Shapiro. It is unfortunate that his behavior caught up with him so tragically. I believe he realizes this now. Let the court system determine his sentence...now spread compassion and love instead of your anger, which by the way...is senseless.

I don't care who you are or where you're from, he was STUPID! He knew he was in no condition to drive. He WAS selfish. He was up to no good before he ever got behind the wheel; we've all heard the story. I am sure that he had no intention of killing someone, but to have so much "education" he sure didn't make an educated choice, did he? He doesn't value his family or his own life. He should be punished to the fullest extent that the law can give him; he, along with every other dumb@ss that gets behind the wheel drunk. I do feel sorry for his family b/c their lives are never going to be the same. But at the same time, his family is intact. Elena's family is forever broken & will never heal. I hope they throw the book at him & I hope that every day he is reminded of that beautiful life he took b/c he was so 'responsible' & 'educated'. Book sense doesn't say crap for common sense, does it? It's such crap that there are people out there saying that we shouldn't be so hard on him. What if he killed your daughter? What would you say then?
  • Honest Mistake
Yesterday, Dr. Raymond Cook put out this written statement:

"Today, in Winston-Salem, Elena Bright Shapiro is laid to rest. My wife, parents and family join me inexpressing our most profound sympathy to Ms. Shapiro's family. Yet, we understand that words can never take away the pain of her loss.

A license to provide medicine is a genuine privilege. It is one that I cherish and have never taken for granted. It has afforded me the opportunity to help and to heal. Today, I surrendered my license to practice medicine. In addition, I resigned my faculty position at UNC and my employment with WakeMed Facial Plastic Surgery. Later this week, I will enter a program that treats substance abuse.

Time might heal some things but it will never take away this hurt and this loss."

These words are really sincere and all these negative comment writes should take his kind words to heart.

Hi, I am a prominent Dr in Raleigh, I am going to go golfing on Friday and stop at a local hang out on my way home for Happy Hour. I am a brilliant doctor that changes lives everyday, and today is just another day. I drive a very expensive and FAST Mercedes Benz and I love my life as it is right now.

I am going to (I have done this many times before, so it is okay) drive double the speed limit and recklessly on Strickland on my way home to my loved ones, so please get out of my way and clear the road, my Mercedes goes really fast, I think I mentioned that already.

By the way, I will be drunk and careless disregard for other humans around me. But remember, I am a wonderful, brilliant doctor that saves lives, so it is ok, you will forgive me.

I have over 20 years of experience with drinking and driving and about 8 years as a brilliant doctor, I have many souveniers from law enforcement regarding this, let my record speak for me. These complement my impressive list of accomplishments and credentials of my medical career. Remember, I am prominent, brilliant, talented surgeon and fine upstanding citizen of the community and really engage in spritual life at church, and close to my pastor.

Yes, I am going to change my life and many others lives tonight and ask that you pray for me and anyone I kill.

    Thanks,

I lost a husband and daughter to two unrelated drunk drivers. We can debate who deserves sympathy but the real issue is how to stop these deaths. We have been trying to motivate/punish people regarding drunk driving for too many years. It doesn't work.
Let's consider requiring car manufacturers to install interlock devices in all cars. Blow a 0 before the car will start. Inconvenient? Yes, but perhaps it will save lives and suffering. The average DWI driver has driver 87 times before s/he is arrested.

I've been sitting on my tongue for days. Can't do it any longer. If you are a friend or family member, or fellow country club member, or fellow doctor, or if you know the family from Sunday School, or private school or the Junior League, and want us to feel badly for what Dr. Cook has lost and/or cost his family, just SHUT UP for awhile. Do you have any idea how incredibly insensitive you are being? I'm certain this man has, in the past, done good deeds for friends, family, patients. I also know he has, in the past, gotten drunk and driven his car at high speed, and been caught prior to killing someone else.

Dr. Maya Angelou has a brilliant quote (that I will paraphrase) "People always tell us who they are. We just often fail to listen." This man told his friends, family, fellow country club members, fellow docs, who he was for years, and years and years. None of you stopped him. All of you who spent evenings, afternoons, weekends with him and saw him drink and then drive -- you all knew. The woman who left the bar with him on Friday night, whoever she was -- she knew.

I hold the good doctor 100% responsible for the death of Elena Shapiro. Since the rest of you seem to know him sooooooo well, and yet did nothing, you are also responsible for this lovely girl's death.

So, stop telling us how kind he was. Stop telling us how this has damaged his family; how he's lost his career; how he's sorry; how his poor children will lose their father. I truly don't care.

You all had years, and years and years to stop him. The rest of us, particularly Elena, never had a chance.

Why doesn't the DA intereview regular customers at Piper's Tavern to hear how much he drank normally? Interview nurses from WakeMed and Duke Raleigh who have seen him drink. There is a nurse in One Day Surgery at Duke Raleigh who knows his history. Find out how many drinks he had at Raleigh Country Club while he played golf. Don't let him get away with this. Please set a precedent for others heavy drinkers. He should have known better than non-health professionals. Why hadn't his wife made him get help?

"Deeply Sadden"...I have a question for you. Dr. Cook seems (based on his past history) to have an issue with high speed, aggressive driving. In my many years on this planet, I've yet to meet a "wonderful" person who "is kind to everyone he meets" that drives aggressively, recklessly and carelessly on a consistent basis as Cook is purported to do. Normally these types tend to be self centered jackasses who think they're above others on the road - and in life. If you could explain this as well as his propensity to drink and drive (and I know you know what I'm talking about) I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Mr. Cook and the young ladys' family are both hurting at this time, I can surely say that her parents would not feel better if his punishment was to be hung in the public for his crime/accident. We can rest assure that with the organizations out there that fight against drunk driving and the law, he will not get off easy.

In response to "Deeply Saddened": I, too, am deeply saddened, but not for Cook---for Elena and her family and friends. While I agree that it should not matter that Cook is wealthy, it does impact this case. People with means (education, power and money) fair much better in our legal system than people without these resources. Cook has been able to hire a pricey attorney at a big law firm and check himself into rehab for physicians.

Another point in your comment that I feel needs response is that I see no indication from my research that Cook was a trauma surgeon as you mentioned. Trauma surgeons are typically general surgeons with specialization in trauma or surgical critical care. Cook's bio online indicates a specialty in Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic Reconstructive Surgery and no other training or board certification is listed.

Additionaly, new information about Cook on the night of the accident bears consideration. Knowing now that Cook had been in a bar drinking with an unidentified woman, one might think perhaps he is also not the "wonderful father and husband" as you had also mentioned. If indeed you are a true friend of his, I believe you should stand by him. HOWEVER, this does not mean that you offer excuses for him, enable his behavior or participate in the cloud of denial that seems to surround this man.
  • Patient
Elena's family and friends have lost a wonderful woman at the start of her life and career. The community has lost a talented surgeon who has saved lives (mine among them). A tremendous loss in every way.
  • Unbelievable
Weighing in on previous comments, I think he is an idiot and he is selfish. The selfish part comes from acting ill responsible by satisfying his social needs in an inappropriate drinking behavior. Everyone now knows the negative impact a DWI can have on your entire family’s life (even without a death by motor vehicle charge). As an educated professional in the field of medicine who better knows the effects of alcohol on the brain and motor skills. My grade school children have more common sense and knowledge about drinking and driving. He is a 40 year old physician, thus his decisions surrounding this situation make him an idiot. Driving his car at 85 MPH through city streets is equivalent to firing a bullet through a crowd of people; eventually it’s going to hit someone. Therefore I have to agree with the comments that he is a selfish idiot. If anyone should ever be fully held accountable for his/her actions it’s this guy. And to all who disagree, you need to first ask yourself “what if it were your child in Elena’s car?” My thoughts and prayers go out to Dr. Cook’s wife and children and to the family of such a beautiful innocent young girl. And yes Robert Mullinax you’re an idiot too!

It seems most appropriate at this time that the focus be on compassion towards Ms. Shapiro's family and friends. Save the debating about Dr. Cook and the Law community for later. It doesn't serve Ms. Shapiro's family to argue now about who's a victim and who's not, or about the flaws in the legal system. A mother and father lost a child. A family lost a sister, niece...etc. People lost a dear friend. The ballet community lost a dancer and friend. The community lost a decent citizen. People intimately involved with Ms. Shapiro need your support and compassion. Send letters. Pray. Do whatever you deem appropriate to offer strength and support to the people who knew and loved her.

In reply to the NC nurse - You comments were very well said. And, you brought up a very good point - that these were the times he was actually "caught". So, there may have been many, many near misses, for many years. To me, in our court system, wrong has become right, and right has become wrong. We bend over backwards for the perpetrater. Where are we headed?? Maybe a policeman can explain "why". In many cases, I realize it is "who you know" that wins the case. That is not justice. When the news reported tonight that after the Piper staff refused to serve Mr. Cook and "the woman" any more drinks, I believe it was the woman that asked that they put their drinks in "to go" cups. Again, showing complete iresponsible behavior when getting ready to "drive." Even with rahab, there are just "ramifications" - cause and effect. Again, this is a sad "example"/warning - for many people to share with their family and friends -(like the man warned the doctor's friends who also drink) - but unfortunately, drinking and driving, driving and texting, driving and looking for a cell phone that is ringing, - these ridiciulous added pleasures while driving, completely go against the fact that driving is a privilege with many serious responsbilities attached,. Many tragic deaths will happen again and again. (more deaths in accidents than in wars - imagine that). We have become sick, self-centered society that needs a serious "heart change." We need to return to the golden rule .
  • Deeply Sadden
Like everyone who has read or heard about this story, I am deeply saddened by the events and I pray for the victims family and for the Dr and his family.

I do however know the physician and unlike what has been said above, he is not a rich guy who makes a living by "fixing peoples noses". He does not believe that he is above the law. He is not just a facial Plastic Surgeon. He is a trained Otolaryngologist. He is a traum surgeon and he makes his living like every other doctor in the world--by helping people. Plastic surgery is only one facet of his life. He reconstructs faces of patients who underwent surgery for cancer etc. He also treats many of the traum victims in Raleigh. He is wonderful father and husband and is kind to everyone that he meets. I know that he is deeply affected by his actions. I know that he is beyond devastated by what he has done. He has taken a vowel to save lives and has lived everyday since doing just that--of course taking a life will affect him. Lets not get caught up in the media's portrayal of his financial status. His actions caused this and he is grieving the loss of an innocent life just as we all are. Just think about it as if the person driving the car was a friend, family member, or loved one. You to would be able to both grieve for the victim and support and love the person responsible. That is what we are doing.
  • Concerned Citizen
Dr. Cook should pay for what he did. This was no mistake! Anyone that drinks and then drives should be held accountable for their actions. Besides, I know several people that know him and he has a reputation for being a heavy drinker. My heart goes out to Elena's family and hope the get the justice deserved!
  • Another NC Nurse
Just realized the screen name I used for the above comment was already taken, so I will be "Another NC Nurse" in deference to my colleague!

I believe someone had noted the next court date for Cook was 10/5, but I just saw a court date for 9/30 as well. I'd like to encourage as many people as possible to be present for Elena and her family. The schedule can be obtained by googling Wake County Court Calender and then entering the defendent's name. I will probably also call the D.A.'s office to verify the info.
  • NC Nurse
In response to an earlier post questioning facts reported by media: the accident report, a two page document filled out by the RPD officer on the scene, substantiates what has been reported in the media. This report documents Cook's estimated traveling speed of 90mph and estimated speed at time of impact as 85mph. It also notes "O" tire impressions before impact seeming to indicate Cook did not apply his brakes. Furthermore, the report states alcohol/drug use suspected of Cook and that Cook was tested with a result of "5". No alcohol/drug use suspected of his victim, Elena.

I consider a "mistake" to be something on the level of forgetting to call back a friend or botching a recipe in the kitchen. What happened the evening of September 11th was no mistake, but another word that begins with "m"---murder. Cook's record details previous "mistakes" from which he did not learn. We should also realize these were only times he was caught!

We must not be silent or still in the presence of this outrage. As mentioned in earlier postings-- contact the District Attorney's office so that your voice be heard and consider joining your local chapter of MADD.

Robert Mullinax: CONGRATULATIONS!!! You have posted without a doubt the biggest pile of bs that I've read in the past several years.

Indeed, sir, YOU ARE AN IMBECILE.

Post haste, please draw a warm bath, get in, then submerge a plugged in hair dryer as your companion.
  • so sad
Where had he been prior? To be that drunk at 8:30 pm lends me to believe he had been drinking for quite a while and not drinking alone. I think he is responsible as is the bar or home he left prior as someone should have stopped him.
  • reply to R Mullinax
Sorry RM - "Should not have to pay for it the remainder of his life" I will post directions at all bars/drinking establishments in town to ensure all drunks drive along Pepperton - since you seem to be the only one willing to forgive a drunk for killing. Look both ways before you step out your front door... Dr Cook is out on only $51K bail. What exactly is stopping him from doing this again -- his conscience, ethics, scruples, principles - oh yeah, all those things that failed him Friday night? If he gets off lightly on this, he will repeat his command performance, it is a statistic that does not lie.
  • This was NO ACCIDENT -
For a moment, try to imaging the Elena's thoughts in the few moments she may or may not have seen Dr.unk Ray coming at her with his drunken death mobile.

I saw the carnage on Strickland that evening. Elena's car was unrecognizable. Dr.unk Ray's as his car crushed Elena into the guardrail on the north side of street and then his car sailed all the way to the south side of Stickland - across 4 lanes of traffic to come to rest facing back the way he was coming. Note, does not seem to be any skid marks indicating breaking by Dr.unk Ray's near the victims car-nage, however plenty of tire marks showing the path his car took after impacting Elena's.

Seems God has a plan, Dr.unk Ray will suffer each and everytime he leaves his driveway and turns left - he lives only 3/4 mile from the scene.

Question : What punishment would Dr.unk Ray be seeking if it were one of his children snuffed by a drunk driver?

This was NO ACCIDENT - he loaded his body with alcohol, reached in his pocket, put the key in the igition and accelerated beyond reckless in his own neighborhood...and killed another human being. He clearly had INTENT - along with SELFISH & STUPID! He should be prosecuted to the Fullest Extent of the Law allows.

Seems Dr.unk Ray's previous drunk driving expeditions as far back as 1988, have revealed a deep rooted issue with alcohol. The man has more problems than being an alcoholic with vehicular manslaughter to add to his impressive glory wall of credentials....
  • Confident
Robert Mullinax... "Does anyone know if Ms. Shapiro had been drinking, and if so, had she broken any traffic laws?" Let's see... entering the highway when she had a green light going 20 mph sounds to me like a drunken idiot... No, that was Dr. Cook, who "accidentally" went 90 mph in a 45 and blew straight through a red light. You are dense Mr. Mullinax if you call this an accident, seriously dense. You must have a few DUI's under your belt as well, that is the only way your comment makes sense.
  • Out of your mind
    Robert Mullinax -

Seriously?! She was driving 20 miles an hour while merging onto a street! If he ran the red light, the she had a green light. So no, I highly doubt the VICTIM was commiting any traffic offenses while driving through a green light at 20 miles an hour. I don't think there are very many traffic laws one can violate at that speed. I feel quite certain if Ms. Shaprio had contributed to her own death by her driving, Dr. Cook would not be charged with 2nd degree murder. DAs don't generally chose to charge people with crimes they don't feel they can plausibly prove.

Dr. Cook has a history of arrests for DWI and/or reckless driving. He obviously never learned a lesson from any of those. He made a concious decision to drive while intoxicated (and it's obviously not the first time he did it). If he cannot keep himself out of car after drinking, he should have stopped drinking. Second degree murder does not imply intent so whether he meant to kill anyone while driving drunk is not the point.
  • Confident
Dr. Cook clearly thought he was invincible. He is a piece of trash, he isn't worthy of being called a human being. He removed a marvelous human being from this earth, and completely ruined the lives of everyone in his family. He has undone all of the good he ever accomplished by murdering this beautiful young girl. And it was murder. I am confident that after his time on this earth has ended he will rot in hell. And there is no better place for him. There is no difference between what he did and picking up a gun, pointing it at someone and pulling the trigger. He deserves the same.
  • Robert Mullinax
This accident, and it was an accident, is horrendous. I feel so deeply sorry for Dr. Cook and his family, along with the family of Ms. Shapiro. I'm sure Dr. Cook is suffering, and hope he can be vindicated from the 2nd degree murder charge. He had no intent for this accident, and should not have to pay for it the remainder of his life. Punished yes, but punished beyond his peers, no. Does anyone know if Ms. Shapiro had been drinking, and if so, had she broken any traffic laws?
  • friend of Dr. Cook
I have known Dr. Cook for a long time. I know his other family members too. I feel sorry for his family that now has to suffer from his poor, irresponsible decision to get behind the wheel of his car and drive when he obviously knew he had had too much to drink. Why didn't he just call his wife to come pick him up or take a cab home? Is Raymond a bad person......well, he is a person that had a choice, and he chose to drive drunk. That decision, yes a selfish one, took the life away from a young, beautiful and talented lady who had her whole life ahead of her.
And as I read other enteries about how "we all do it"...that is crap. The irresponsible one's do it. I have a family, kids, friends, etc...I do NOT drink and drive...period! I might have a glass of wine at dinner, but that is it if I have to drive. We ALL have choices to make and we should be held 100% accountable in a time like this when we make a careless, selfish decision to drive under the influence. This young girl died.....it makes me so sad. Wake up people....
And there a lot of people reading this, some who even know Raymond very well....you too have drinking problems. Grow Up!!!!!!! Get the help you need before you make the same mistake. Life is not about getting drunk everyday to escape reality. Sorry...it just make me so mad!
  • Cathy
As a parent of a child that was taken from us all to early by a drunk driver, my heart goes out to the Shapiro family. You have a long journey ahead of you and only time will somewhat ease the pain. I have learned through MADD that when a person is killed by a drunk driver, it is not an accident, it's a conscious decision that someone made to drink and drive. People make bad choices every day and they have to live with the decisions that they make. Dr, Cook chose to drink and drive, killing a young woman, and he should be punished. Remember, that no matter what his punishment is it will never compare to the pain that Elena's parents, friends and family will have to go through without her in their lives. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
  • LET 'EM KNOW!!!
Screw this guy. haven't we as a society had ENOUGH of rude, arrogant jerks like this guy who feel that they're above the law and can operate with impunity? Consider the FACTS: - Cook has a PATTERN of prior reckless driving. In fact, he was recently cited for speeding and reckless driving in a separate incident! - He KILLED his victim by driving 90 mph on a sleepy residential street - double the speed limit. - By witness accounts, he spent several hours at Carolina Country Club drinking heavily prior to driving and was extremely obnoxious and rude to other patrons. String this guy up. He deserves no less that anyone else would get for such a heinous act. Call the Wake County District Attorney's office today and let them know you're watching this case. NO SWEETHEART DEALS FOR WEALTHY DEFENDENTS!!! Colon Willoughby, Jr. Wake County District Attorney (919) 792-5000

Drunks have NO conscience. If he would do this,he would operate on you impaired as well.Let's hope the state medical board revokes his license instead of gathering around one of their own.DUI convictions should spend a long time in jail and rehab and not wait until they kill someone. How many times, how many people had to see this person impaired and behaving irresponsibly before this particular time ?What if one of them, maybe even the Doctor himself, who certainly knew he had a problem, had taken a stand against his behavior? I agree to take your pastor and wife with you to court is a cowardly ploy, give us a break!
  • a parent
There is no greater loss than that of a child. Unfortunately, The Shapiro Family is now forever changed. Not a day will go by that they will not remember and mourn the loss of Elena. For the rest of their lives, they will try to imagine what would have been. So many lost hopes and dreams. Elena Shapiro's family and friends, as well as our community should angry with Dr. Cook for taking away such a precious gift. My heart aches for all the innocent lives he has damaged and forever altered.
  • Jean
This just proves my point. We put doctors on a throne - and now - they need to be where the rest of society is - and they need to have regular drug/alcohol testing - any time they enter a sugical room. How many drunk surgeons have been operating on innocoent victims? We need some new laws on drunk driving - and not - three times, your out. No, one time is all it takes - and you lose your license - for life. And drunk driving causing a death - should be a long, long jail sentencing - with no parole. We need to mean business about this.
  • friend of victim's loved ones
Maybe if the consequences of driving drunk at all were much more undesirable (like 6 months in jail and 2-5 years probation while doing 5-10 hours a week for the duration of community service - and 5 years in jail for a second offense, 10 years for a third, etc.) and impossible to weasel out of, then we wouldn't have so many deaths from drunk driving. The crime after all is getting behind the wheel in an impaired condition and putting other people's lives at risk regardless of whether you actually kill them or not. Killing someone should get you the opportunity to work to pay a sizeable fine directly to the victim's family for what would have been the victim's natural life span. Don't take the "good" doctors' liscense. Just make him pass an alcohol and drug blood test before every work day and let him work to pay for the funeral and the educational expenses that were spent to get her started in this short life and the family's grief counseling and her share of the elder care of her parents when the time comes, etc. Don't let him sit in jail and rot at the tax payer's expense. In fact, doctors like him properly supervised might be a partial answer to the health care dilemma. They should provide 20 hours a week to FREE clinics. That would certainly sober a few of them up.
  • Mort
This XXX has a pending reckless driving charge against him as well!

    Let's review:

    Driving 90 mph down Strickland
    Blew through a red light
    Killed an innocent

He deserves to be strung up. I see that he showed up in court today with his pastor. What a freaking joke. Another Sarah Palin pseudo Christian circa 2009. Do as I say, not as I do. Piss off.
  • Bill
Tragic. He should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It doesn't matter though what his occupation was or the type of car he was driving. Spare me the "another doctor who thinks he's above the law" crap. I'm sure doctors fought to save this young girl's life too. Try not to impune many caring and hard working people with your stereotypes.
  • North Raleigh Resident
Sorry 'community member'...He is NOT a victim......in any way, shape or form. For all of you trying to justify your own drinking and driving by saying everyone has done it at some time or another...please...learn from this and don't do it again...you may be the next person that everyone is posting about.
  • want the facts
Does anyone know what he blew on the DWI test? Where he was going/comming from that caused him to be in such a hurry? I just want more facts.
  • Observer
I feel horrible this happened and hope all parties can deal with the pain. I have not seen a police report and not sure if one has been released. Maybe, the speed the media is using is not correct? Does anyone know how exaclty the accident occured or if the drinking was the cause of the accident. Once the facts are known, we can all have a better understanding of what happened that night.
  • Community member
I feel for Elena's family, and I am sure she was an amazing young woman and Dr. Cook should be charged with what he is due based on his actions. But to say he intended to kill her is absurd. We all have gone out with friends had a few drinks and never intended to get drunk and most of all drive home. But as we all know, being drunk alters a person leaving them unable to make logical and responsible decisions. To say his arrogance made him drive fast and kill her, isn't right either. I think we all need to pray for all the victims in this situation, and pray people will learn from this tragic accident. Let the justice system decide what his punishment should be and not make an example of him only b/c he was successful, financially comfortable, and a Dr. most of all. We all are human and put our pants on the same as the next guy. Punish him for his crime, but most importantly teach him and others that what he did is devastating. As for both families, may time and god help them heal.

This is such a tragedy, and so close to home. All I can think of is, "It could have been me (who was killed). It could have been my husband. It could have been my son. It could have been my friend, my mother, my neighbors..." I drive this route countless times in a week.

My heart goes out to all affected by this tragedy.

Please, let us all learn our lessons here:
Do NOT drive after having drinks - EVER (It's too bad they call it "drunk driving" because most of us define drunk as completely plowed, thus think we're ok to drive when we're only "just buzzed.")
    SLOW down.
Be more COURTEOUS behind the wheel.

I'm so sorry for Ms. Shapiro's family. She is truly a lovely lady, and a bright light went out when she died. This is nothing less than a horrible tragedy. A note to those who think they can make the short drive home after drinking: Look how close to home the doctor was. Probably thought he could make it safely. The focus should be on the massive loss Ms. Shapiro's family is suffering, and on preventing ANYONE from drinking and driving.

The bottom line is that the choice to drive after drinking is a violent crime against that young lady. He might as well have picked up a gun and shot her. It is a clear example of the tragic results of decision like this. The rippled affects are endless. The employees at the hospital are devastated, the family of this beautiful girl are forever affected, the family of this doctor now have to figure out how to live life without their main bread winner, those children without their father, the community becomes more fearful of living life. It goes on and on. What will it take to finally but an end to this insane crime of driving drunk?

To "Family Friend" or Dr. Cook,

    Screw you!!
  • Patient/Friend
My heart breaks for all families involved: Ms. Shapiro's and Dr. Cook's. I agree that Dr. Cook made a selfish decision. I am sure he is full of grief about what has happened. This should be a lesson to use all on how one bad decision and one minute can change lives forever.

Dr. Cook is a good and descent man and has been a wonderful asset to the medical field with many great accomplishments in his career. No one can punish him more, than he will punish himself. I just hope that he can rise above all of what faces him in the future and that this does not destroy him completely.

While I know he is 100% responsible for the decision to drink and drive. I do not mean to undermine this tragic event. And, everywhere I've read, everyone wants him punished, I still have a few questions. Where was he coming from and who served him all that alcohol? Who let him leave wherever he was that intoxicated? They are just as responsible as he is in NC for letting him get behind the wheel of that car, whether he left a bar, a restaurant, or a residence.

The Shapiro's and Dr. Cook's family are in my thoughts and prayers. Be strong and God will be your shining light in this time of sorrow. He will carry you when you feel you cannot go on. Have faith!
  • Neighbor in WS
I can't believe anybody would have the gall to come on here and DEFEND (in any way shape or form) the piece of garbage that mindlessly, selfishly (and drunkenly) snuffed out this young lady's life. I hope you realize that by rationalizing his actions you are missing the only point that needs to be made here, and that's that this man is absolutely responsible for killing an innocent person. He killed her through negligence and he should be treated as the killer that he is.
  • Joe
People, people...wise up. This jackass: a) got tanked, b) hopped in his car, c) drove 90 MPH DOWN STRICKLAND AND BLEW THROUGH A RED LIGHT, KILLING SOMEONE. Read that last one again. 90 mph??? On Strickland coming from 6 Forks??? I drive that way several times a week and this, frankly, seems next to impossible. Yet this douchebag did it. To the above poster who states that the good doctor "feels horrible" and "regrets what he did", I bet he does. Too bad that sense of responsibility wasn't there beforehand. My guess is that it probably was having a hard time coming out due to the overwhelming sense of entitlement he must have been feeling at the time. Here's hoping: a) he spends a long time in jail, b) loses his ability to practice medicine, c) gets sues for everything he has and ever will have, d) contracts terminal anal cancer and dies a slow, painful death.
  • Hicks
    Drunk driving is SELFISH. PERIOD.
  • T100C-1970
    To "family friend":

I definitely don't think he desired this to happen. I wouldn't call him selfish either. His academic record indicates he's not stupid either. I've driven under "questionable circumstances" myself. In those cases I have taken GREAT care to focus upon what I was doing and NEVER violate any traffic law. Even in my least or worst (which was pretty bad) DUI state would I have EVER considered the idea that high speed driving while drunk was a good idea.

So given not selfish and not stupid how do we get to driving 80+ MPH while drunk. I think the answer is SUPREME ARROGANCE of the type rarely seen outside Washington DC. He is probably also a serious alcoholic and will try to use that as an excuse to trade treatment for prison.

I think a few years in prison will do something to take the edge off the arrogance and will also help him with his alcohol problem.
  • Neighbor in Treamoor
Shame on him, this was NO ACCIDENT, it was his INTENTION to DRINK, DRIVE DRUNK, and SPEED perhaps not to KILL, but that was the consequence he should have considered. Seems a well educated man, but STUPID. I have the greatest sympathy for Elena's family and their incredible loss... I also have no ill will with Mrs Cook and children.

I no longer feel safe in our neighborhood, knowing he may be around, I used to allow my children walk/ride bikes from Treamoor to Baileywick park, but if Dr Cook is barreling along Strickland - Drunk - I sure will keep my children indoors from now on.
  • Friend of Family
My wife and I have been friends with Elena's family for over twenty years. We used to babysit Elena. She comes from a family of dancers. Her mother danced for the S.F. Ballet, her brother dances for Boston's ballet, and her older sister was a dancer as well. Both parents have long been a part of the arts in Winston-Salem and are well known throughout our community. The entire community is devastated by this. In Dr. Cook's case, it shows that no one, no matter their station in life, is immune to alcohol-fueled decisions that lead from thoughtless to tragic.

When I did a search to find more information on the accident, Google had a two-page list of innocent victims of drunk drivers-- in Raleigh alone. I know Dr. Cook and his family are suffering, but he should be made an example of (along with other drunk drivers) to reverse the trend, and the punishments should help be a cautionary lesson rather than weak enough to not register as a legitimate danger to those emboldened by alcohol.
  • Family Friend
That was extreamly rude. How can you call him selfish? If you really think that he wanted to get into this accident so that he could destroy his families life then you're the idiot. He made a mistake and he is in a horrible situation. He feels horrible about this and regrets everything he did.
  • Physician friend
What an idiot. I know Raymond and his wife and he just gave their life away. My prayers to the young ladies family. Raymond should lose his liscense and should serve many years to think about this in jail. Unfortunately his innocent wife and kids will have to pay for his stupidity as well. He is a very selfish person! This is terrible!
