Vitals Spotlight - We Give the Doctor an Exam

On Friday, August 28th, New York saw yet another young disc jockey prodigy lose his life at 36. Dr. Drew Pinsky believes that prescription medication was ultimately what killed him.

DJ AM, Adam Goldstein, had battled a life of addiction with alcohol and drugs. Eleven years sober and a sponsor to many battling with the same problems, he was found dead in his New York apartment surrounded by a crack pipe and prescription pills.

Earlier this year, DJ AM and Travis Barker of Blink 182, walked away alive bruised and burned from a plane crash that killed four other passengers. He was likely taking various pain medication for his burn injuries, for which he had to get two skin graft surgeries.

“It very slowly and subtly reawakens addiction. I’m not saying it was inappropriately prescribed, I’m saying he didn’t know the risks,” said Dr. Drew, an internist and host of VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab.”

 

“He was someone I referred people to to learn about recovery.”

DJ AM has been working on an MTV show that was set to debut this fall,

called “Gone Too Far,” where he staged interventions for young people battling with drugs and addictions. The show has been canceled due to his tragic death.
