Dr. David Friedman – Avoid Fourth of July Fireworks Injuries

With the fourth of July around the corner, Dr. David Friedman advises extreme caution to avoid firework related accidents. According to Vitals.com, Dr. Friedman received his medical degree at the University Of Texas Galveston School Of Medicine and is the chairman of the Department of Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at Cleveland Clinic in Florida.

“Many of the fireworks-related injuries I’ve treated as a hand surgeon involve children and teens who sustain burns and dismemberments of fingers due to novelty items that suddenly explode. The most common fireworks injuries are caused by firecrackers, which are essentially gunpowder. Often people try to diffuse them with their fingers and just don’t realize the fuses burn for only a few seconds.”

National Fire Protection Association states that the hands are one of the most vulnerable spots, accounting for 37 percent of fireworks-related mishaps, followed by eyes which account for 24 percent of cases.

Doctors advise that when it comes to fireworks, leave it to the pros. Enjoy the breathtaking displays across the country, such as the Macy’s Day Spectacular, which are scheduled to explode across our skies!
